The eucharist is a traditional wisdom and practice of the Church that have been inherited from the earliest Christendom. Many protestant churches today have recently became more concerned with the recovery of the authentic eucharist in their Sunday public worships. However, despite of their concerns and trials, the results don't show any further outstanding progress in their pastoral fields. The reason for that may be because, even if the churches have had more high regards for the sacramentality in their liturgy in comparison with the past, they've evidently lacked in their practical skills and strategies for contextualization of the eucharist to particular socio-cultural settings of current local protestant churches. People in contemporary society are entirely different in cultural paradigm from those in ancient world, who experienced the eucharist clothed with symbols and communicational media from their own cultural background. Just as Christians of reformation period experienced rapid changes in communication mechanism, so people today are also fiercely struggling with speedy and effective adjustment of themselves in rapidly changing new muli-media environment. Therefore, if the present protestant churches attempt to recover the original old forms and contents of the eucharist without more strategically considerate attitudes and examination, they might not be able to avoid ineffective liturgical formalism and eventual failure of down to earth worship experiences. It is evident that people in contemporary world don't feel comfortable with boresome redundancy in too ancient style of literal expressions, cultural strangeness and unfamiliarity in them. From this awareness, the churches today need to acknowledge the reality and make further efforts for the detailed embodiment of precious symbolic gospel, the eucharist among contemporary Christians.

성찬은 초대교회로부터 전수된 전통적 지혜요, 관습이다. 오늘날 많은 개신교회들이 이를 주일 공예배 안에 제대로 복원하여 사용하고자 하는 관심은 높아졌지만 그럼에도 불구하고 목회 현장에서 더 이상의 두드러진 변화는 나타나지 않고 있다. 이런 이유는 비록 교회가 과거에 비하여 예배 내의 성례전의 비중을 강화하고자 하는 관심은 높아졌지만 그럼에도 불구하고 현대 개신교들이 처한 특정의 사회문화적 환경에, 특히 그런 정황에 맞게 적용하려는 노력을 심도 있게 기울이지 못하는 것이 주원인이라 할 수 있다. 오늘의 사회를 사는 사람들은 고대 사회의 사람들과 문화적 패러다임에 있어서 전적으로 다르며 그들이 경험한 성찬은 그들 자신의 문화적 배경 하에 존재하는 상징 및 소통 미디어로 포장된 것이었음을 잊어서는 안 된다. 종교개혁시대의 기독교인들이 그랬던 것처럼 오늘의 신자들은 급격하게 변화하는 새로운 다중 매체 환경에 빠르고 효과적으로 적응하기 위해 부단한 노력을 기울이지 않을 수 없는 현실 속에서 살고 있다. 그러므로 만일 현재의 개신교회들이 보다 전략적이고도 사려 깊은 태도와 검토 없이 성찬의 원형적 형식과 내용을 존중한다는 명분으로 과거 그대로 복원하려고 시도한다면 이는 반드시 형식주의에 빠지거나 결과적으로 실체적인 성찬 경험을 가져오는 데 실패하고 마는 결과를 낳고 말 것이다. 오늘의 세계 속의 사람들은 과도하게 문어적인 표현의 옛 스타일 속에 들어 있는 지루하고 불필요한 표현들에 대해 편안함을 느낄 수가 없다. 이런 인식 위에서 오늘의 교회는 그 현실을 직시하고 소중한 상징 복음인 성찬을 현대 기독교인들 가운데 지속적으로 의미 있게 주어지도로 하기 위한, 좀 더 세밀하고 상황 변용적 기획 등의 노력을 더 한층 기울여야 할 것이다.
