This study attempts to investigate the hermit (仙[s∧n]) of Hwarangsegi written in Shilla dynasty. First of all, it discusses whether the hermit (仙) originated from Shilla language or not. Next it reviews the contents of curriculum for the hermit. The text analysis of Hwarangsegi translated into Hangul was employed for this study. The results of study are as followings: 1) The meaning of hermit represented in Hwarangsegi was totally different from that of Chinese hermit. The former referred to 'the manly men trained in mountains' where as the latter referred to the mythical beings. The hermits were the group participating in training camps on mountain areas to deal with and control the worship services for the heaven. 2) No meaning and content about eternal life, immortality in Chinese Taoism was found in the curriculum of the hermit. The hermit-curriculum which the Hwarangs had learned included history, and the practical courses such as singing and dancing and the art of fencing. They had also learned how to accomplish a unity between their bodies and the universe through acquiring the energy from the cosmos. However, no concrete methods for such unification were described in Hwarangsegi

이 연구의 목적은 화랑세기에 보이는 仙의 실체를 밝히는 것에 두었다. 먼저 선이 신라어일 가능성에 관해 논하고 다음은 仙道의 내용을 고찰하였다. 연구의 방법으로서는 이종욱이 역주한 화랑세기를 주요 텍스트로 하여 이를 분석하는 문헌방법을 채택 하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 화랑세기에 보이는 선은 중국적 신선을 뜻하는 것이 아니라 신라어의‘ 산에서 수련한 사나이’를 말한다. 따라서 선의 무리는 신궁에서 천제를 주관하기 위한 실제적인 수련을 한 무리들이다. 2) 화랑세기에 보이는 선도에는 중국에서 발생한 도교의 장생불사적 의미는 없었다. 화랑들이 수행한 선도는 역사, 가무, 검술 등 실제적인 과목의 이수와 우주의 밝은 기를 습득하여 천과 합일하는 것인데 그 구체적인 방법은 기술되어 있지 않다.
