For the purpose of identifying the nature of epistemological beliefs and finding the possible relations between epistemological beliefs and critical thinking dispositions, 430 responses to a epistemological beliefs test and 239 responses to a critical thinking dispositions test from two separate samples in a university in Kunsan were analysed. A series of confirmatory factor analyses of the data have shown that students's epistemological beliefs can be understood as a multidimensional system of five factors including 3 beliefs about knowledge called 'certain knowledge', 'simple knowledge' and 'absolute authority' and two beliefs about learning called 'fast learning' and 'innate learning ability'. A series of stepwise regressions on critical thinking disposition factors with 5 epistemological beliefs as predictors have shown that the less the students hold beliefs in simple knowledge and absolute authority and the less they believe in fast learning and innate learning ability, the more they show all or some of critical thinking dispositions. Based on these findings the need to pay full attention to the roles epistemological beliefs can play in the reflective higher-order thinking in college classrooms was highlighted.

본 연구는 인식론적 신념의 특성과 비판적 사고성향간의 관계를 탐구해 보는 것을 목적으로, 지방의 한 종합대학에서 표집된 학생들의 인식론적 신념과 비판적 사고성향 검사지에 대한 응답을 분석하였다. 430명의 학생응답에 대한 일련의 확인적 요인분석 결과 '지식의 확실성'과 '지식의 단순성', '지적 권위의 절대성'의 지식관과 '학습의 즉각성'과 '학습능력의 선천성'의 학습관이 확인되어, Schommer의 개념적 구조에 기초한 인식론적 신념의 다면성에 대한 지지 증거를 확보하였다. 239명의 응답자료를 기초로 비판적 사고성향의 여러 측면에 대한 인식론적 신념 요인들의 회귀분석을 실시한 결과, 지식의 단순성과 권위의 절대성에 대한 신념과 학습의 즉각성과 학습의 선천성에 대한 신념이 학생들의 비판적 사고성향의 거의 모든 요인들에 대한 유의한 예측변인으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과는 정보의 고차수준의 처리와 반성적인 활용을 도모해야 하는 고등교육에서 인식론적 신념이 가지는 중요성에 새롭게 주목할 필요를 요청하고 있다.
