Attempts for integrative researches of individuals' morality and moral development have began with reflection on cognitive developmental models related to moral reasoning stages. The research of moral identity might have been launched by Blasi's works in the domains of moral identity and character in the early 1980s as one of these attempts. Although Blasi opened a window to discuss the theory of moral identity, empirical researches related to moral identity have moved slowly. Also the theoretical and empirical researches for moral identity almost have little consistency between them. Consequently, this study will seek for the integrative research methode of moral identity. To achieve this aim, I will divide these researches related to it into two perspectives: character perspective and social-cognitive perspective. Then, I look into the fundamental ideas and theoretical characteristics of each perspective. The character perspective suggests that the essences of a person having moral identity are three virtues: willpower, integration, moral desire. On the other hand, the social-cognitive perspective adopts it's theoretical mechanisms from social cognition, memory, identity, and information-processing when it explains the roles of moral identity in the moral functioning. But all of two perspectives emphasize the self-importance of moral identity which may decide self-regulation within an individual's moral behavior. By making full use of these features, this article will explore the possibility for association of character and social-cognitive perspectives, which will suggest the direction of comprehensive and integrative study about moral identity. Moreover, the whole course of this study will help us to understand the key constructs of a person's morality and moral identity, the major factors influencing formation and development of moral identity, as well as interactions between the former and the latter.

도덕성을 통합적으로 연구하려는 시도는 인지발달 중심의 단계 이론에 대한 반성에서 시작되었다. 그런 시도로서 도덕적 정체성에 대한 연구는 1980년대 초반 블라시(A. Blasi)의 연구들에 의해 탄력을 받았다. 그러나 블라시가 도덕적 정체성에 대한 이론적 논의의 장을 열었지만, 그것에 대한 경험적 연구들은 느리게 진행되었다. 그리고 도덕적 정체성에 대한 이론적 및 경험적 연구들이 서로간의 통일성을 상당히 확보하지 못하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 도덕적 정체성을 보다 통합적으로 연구하기 위한 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위해, 연구자는 도덕적 정체성 연구의 주요 흐름들을 두 가지 관점, 즉 인격적 관점과 사회·인지적 관점으로 나누어 각각의 기본 관점과 이론적 특징을 밝히고자 한다. 인격적 관점은 의지력, 통합성, 도덕적 욕구 이 세 가지 덕을 도덕적 정체성을 가진 사람의 본질로 상정한다. 반면, 사회·인지적 관점은 도덕적 작용에서 도덕적 정체성의 역할을 설명 할 때 사회 인지, 기억, 정체성, 정보처리로부터 이론적 메커니즘을 채택한다. 하지만 두 관점은 개인의 도덕적 행동에서 자기 규제력을 결정하는 것으로 도덕적 자아의 중요성을 강조한다. 이와 같은 공통점들을 활용하여 본 연구는 두 가지 관점의 통합 가능성을 탐색하고 도덕적 정체성을 포괄적이고 통합적으로 연구할 수 있는 방안을 찾아 볼 것이다. 본 연구의 전체 과정은 인간의 도덕성 및 도덕적 정체성의 핵심 구인들, 그리고 도덕적 정체성 형성과 발달에 영향을 미치는 핵심 변인들뿐만 아니라 그것들 간의 상호작용에 대한 우리의 이해를 도울 것이다.
