This study is tried to show the consciousness of Japan and the changed aspect of conscious reviewd by the letter written by NamOk. For eleven months, NamOk worked as Jaesulkwan during the trip as Jaemitongshinsa for advocating Japanese people. He wrote three different kinds book with the letters based on his experiences during that time.
What these three books trying to handle is Ilkwansicho. This book is collected by the poems that written based on what NamOk feel and experienced during eleven months. By this point, Ilkwansicho is the best book to see NamOk's literature talent and consciousness of Japan.
Now being handed down as hand-copied Ilkwansicho has many issues in the editing structure and the contained poems. The editing structure wasn't consistent and also wrong and missiong words are founded. The problem of Ilkwansicho was that this book wasn't made right after created so it can be guessed that the book was recored while NamOk coming back.
In NamOk's poem in Ilkwansicho, two different aspects of his consciousness are founded. One aspect is about wonder from scenary in Japan and the other is about the sense of superiority for Chosun's moral and culture from Japan. This double-sidedness was integrated by the sense of superiority for moral in his mind. But this integrated mind doesn't mean the positive for Chosun or negative for Japan. Rather than that, it showed the positive aspect from both Chosun and Japan.
Like this kind change in consciousness shows that literary man in Chosun has changed their consciousness for Japan. In this view point, consciousness for Japan expressed in NamOk's poem having double-sidedness not like other literary man in Chosun has meaning and also showing that mind changing happened in literary man in Chosun later.
By the decision how this double-sidedness of consciousness for Japan having in literary man in Chosun who living the same time with NamOk being expended in which direction, the way of reaction for Japan or any other western countries can be decided.

이 글은 秋月南玉의 『日觀詩草』에 나타난 남옥의 일본 인식에 대해 살펴본 것이다. 남옥은 11개월이라는 긴 계미통신사행 기간 동안 제술관 신분으로 일본 인사들과의 수창을 전담했다. 그는 이 기간 동안의 경험과 창작한 시문을『日觀記』․『日觀唱酬』․『日觀詩草』세 종류의 책으로 엮었다.
남옥이 엮은 세 종류의 책 중, 이 글에서 다루고자 하는 것은『일관시초』이다. 이 책은 11개월의 사행기간 동안 남옥이 느낀 개인적인 심회를 읊은 시로 이루어져 있다. 이런 점에서『일관시초』는 공적이고 의무적으로 창작된 수창시집인『일관창수』나 일기문인『일관기』에 비해 남옥의 문학적 역량과 일본에 대한 인식을 확인하기에 좋은 자료라고 할 수 있다.
현재 필사 초간본으로 전하는『일관시초』는 편집 체계와 수록된 시 두 방향에서 모두 적지 않은 문제점을 지니고 있다. 편집 체계가 일정하지 않고 수록된 시에서 誤字와 落字가 군데군데 눈에 띈다. 『일관시초』의 문제점은 이 책이 시의 창작과 동시에 만들어진 것이 아니라 귀국 도중 남옥에 의해 새롭게 기록되면서 발생한 것이 아닐까 유추된다.
『일관시초』속 남옥의 시를 살펴보면 일본에 대한 남옥의 인식이 양면성을 지니고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 일본의 경물과 풍광에 대한 감탄과 경이가 그 한 면이 고, 일본에 대한 조선의 도덕적․문화적 우월감이 또 다른 한 면이다. 이 양면성은 남옥의 내면에 자리하고 있는 도덕적 우월의식에 의해 하나로 통합된다. 하지만, 도덕적 우월의식에 의해 하나로 통합되는 남옥의 양면성이 조선에 대한 긍정과 일본에 대한 부정을 의미한다고 보이지 않는다. 그것보다는 오히려 조선과 일본에 대한 상호 긍정의 모습을 보여준다.
이와 같은 인식은 이전까지 볼 수 있었던 조선 문사들의 일본에 대한 도덕성 중심의 일방적인 가치 판단에서 한 걸음 움직인 것이라 생각된다. 남옥의 시에서 확인할 수 있는 일본의 문물과 풍광에 대한 긍정의 시선은 분명 그가 일본을 다시 보는 계기가 되었을 것이고, 이 새로운 시선에 의해 바라본 일본의 모습은 남옥에게 경탄과 경이를 주는 매체로 작용했을 것이다.
남옥의 시에 나타난 대 일본 인식이 상호 긍정을 통한 양면성을 지니고 있다는 것은 그 자체로 의미를 가질 뿐만 아니라 앞으로 변화하게 될 조선 문사들의 대 일본 의식 변화의 단초를 보여주는 것이라는 점에서도 적지 않은 의미를 지니다고 생각된다. 그것은 남옥 당대 조선 문사들이 가지고 있었던 일본 인식의 양면성이 어느 방향으로 확장되느냐에 따라 일본 혹은 그와 유사한 서구 세력에 대한 대응의 방향을 결정해 줄 것이기 때문이다.
