The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of tolerance in the field of moral education through theoretical consideration. tolerance refers to not acting in a negative behavior regarding objects that people dislike or consider morally inappropriate and it is justified in terms of prudence, rationality, and morality. Tolerance education should be performed to the extent that “tolerance” itself is not denied and practical limitations should be overcome through raising practical disposition via motivation and habit formation. In the field of moral education, tolerance is virtue and essential disposition for self-regulating decision as well. If we approach it as contents, tolerance education can be the central rational decision and habit formation. If we approach it formally, it is the basic principle for interaction that makes development of cognitive structure possible. In moral education, tolerance education it is essential to include the following : self-understanding and exclusion of prejudice, the expansion of sympathy, respect for others, and peaceful coexistence.

본 연구의 목적은 관용에 대한 이론적 고찰을 통해 관용이 도덕 교육에서 가지는 의의를 밝히는데 있다. 관용이란 ‘싫어하거나 도덕적으로 옳지 않다고 생각하는 대상에 대해 부정적인 행위를 자발적으로 하지 않는 것’으로 분별력․합리성․도덕성의 차원에서 정당화된다. 관용 교육은 관용이 부정되지 않는 범위에서 실시되어야 하며 동기와 습관화를 통해 실천성향을 길러줌으로써 실천적 한계를 극복하는 방향으로 이루어져야 할 것이다. 도덕 교육의 장에서 관용은 덕목이면서 동시에 자율적 판단에 필요한 자질로서 의미를 가진다. 내용적으로 접근할 경우, 관용 교육은 합리적 판단과 습관화를 중심으로 모색될 수 있다. 형식적으로 접근할 경우, 관용은 인지구조의 발달을 가능하게 하는 상호작용에 필요한 기본적 자질로 요구된다. 도덕 교육에서 관용 교육은 특히 자기 이해와 편견 제거, 공감력 확대와 타인 존중, 평화적인 공존을 담아낼 수 있어야 할 것이다.
