This study aims at explaining results of the 18th National Elections with results of the 17th Presidential Election. In particular, the study examines how deeply the vote percentage of Lee Myung-bak in the 17th Presidential Election taking place just 4 month prior to the 18th National Election had an effect on vote percentages of the Grand National Party's candidates in the 18th National Election. Likewise, it attempts to analyze whether the relation between the two vote percentages differs according to regions and the presence of the Pro-Park Coalition's candidate. Statistical results showed that vote percentages of GNP's candidates were strongly affected by regionalism, candidates of the Pro-Park Coalition, and the vote percentage of Lee Myung-bak in the 17th Presidential Election. Also, results exhibited a number of candidates in an electoral district, incumbency effect, and legislators' experience had an effect on vote percentages of GNP's candidates. Results indicates that the 18th National Election can be characterized by the results of the 17th Presidential Election and the formation of the Pro-Park Coalition caused by an intra-party conflicts of the GNP. The governing party is located in a favorable circumstance if the National Election is held in the president's early term. However, it is required to examine more carefully whether this pattern continues regularly.

본 연구는 제18대 국회의원 선거결과를 지역구를 분석단위로 하여 제17대 대통령선거 결과를 중심으로 설명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 구체적으로 제18대 국회의원선거에서 한나라당 후보의 득표율을 제17대 대통령선거에서 이명박 후보가 얻은 득표율을 통해 어느 정도 설명이 가능한지 알아봄으로써 두 변수 간 어떠한 관련성이 있는지 분석해 보았다. 또한, 이러한 연관성이 친박연대의 영향으로 인해 지역별로 어떻게 달리 나타났는지 알아보았다. 통계결과를 통해 한나라당후보의 득표율에 크게 영향을 미친 요인은 이명박 후보의 득표율과 친박연대의 출마 여부, 그리고 지역주의 투표행태라는 점을 알 수 있었다. 이와 함께 현직효과, 의정경험, 후보자의 수 또한 한나라당 후보에 영향을 미친 중요한 변수다. 이러한 결과가 의미하는 것은 과거 다른 국회의원선거와 달리 제18대 국회의원선거를 설명함에 있어 대통령선거 결과와 한나라당 공천갈등에 따라 나타난 친박연대의 출마가 중요한 특징임을 보여주는 것이다. 대통령 임기 중반에 주요 선거가 실시된다면 여당은 불리한 위치에 놓이지만 반면 임기 초반에 주요 선거가 실시된다면 여당이 유리한 위치에 놓이게 된다고 말할 수 있겠다. 이러한 결과가 규칙적으로 나타날 것인지 지속적인 관찰 및 분석이 요구된다.
