The spread of multi-culturalism going on worldwide can be no exception to Korean society. Even in Korean society, the phenomenon of multi-culturalism is already generalized and this is coming close to us as an issue to be accepted. However, the realities are that the multi-culturalism, which has developed centering on Western society, stays at an 'identification strategy' in which it intends to assimilate a minority culture into a majority culture rather than creates a new synergy through the maximization of diversity and difference. Behind such a background lies a philosophical history expanding the concept of a pure principal agent starting from Descartes into absolute universality. The thing which expands the concept of 'I' and a principal agent into absolute universality was expanded even into a divine 'self' and absolute spirit which provide the existence itself in an absolute sense. That means going towards an absolute 'self' which never leaves any pattern of others behind except 'oneself.' This research concludes that it's proper for principal-agent-centered ethics to convert themselves into others-centered ones in order to display ethical performance suited for multi-cultural society, and thus, this research is intending to examine the concept of responsibility for others as social value applicable for this purpose.

세계적으로 진행되는 다문화주의의 확산은 한국사회라고 예외일 수 없다. 한국사회에서도 다문화주의현상은 이미 일반화되고 있으며 또한 우리가 수용해야할 문제로 다가오고 있다. 그러나 서구사회를 중심으로 발달된 다문화주의는 다양성과 차이의 극대화를 통한 새로운 시너지를 창출해 내기 보다는 다수의 문화에 소수의 문화를 동화시키고자 하는 ‘동일화 전략’에 머물러 있는 것이 현실이다. 이러한 배경에는 서구사회가 데카르트로부터 시작된 순수주체의 개념을 절대적 보편성으로 확장해간 철학적 역사가 자리 잡고 있다. ‘나’와 주체의 개념을 절대적 보편성으로 확장해 나가는 것은 존재 자체를 절대적인 의미에서 규정하는 신적 자아와 절대정신으로까지 확장되었다. 그것은 자기 외에 어떤 유형의 타자도 남겨 놓지 않는 절대자아로 나아가게 됨을 의미한다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 주체중심의 윤리가 전 지구적으로 확산되는 다문화사회에 적합한 윤리적 실천력을 발휘하기 위해서는 이를 타자중심의 윤리로 전환해야 함이 합당한 것이며 이를 위해 적용할 수 있는 사회적 가치로서 타자에 대한 책임의 개념을 검토해 보기로 한다.
