The suicide rates rose from 12.9 per 100,000 persons in 1996 to 24.8 in 2007. The suicide rate for the elderly has been rising more rapidly when compared to those of the other age groups. In order to prevent suicidal behavior for the elderly patients, it is necessary to find out and/or any risk or buffering factor that is related suicidal ideation. This study was to delineate a buffering effect of family support and spirituality on suicidal ideation for the elderly outpatients. Even though the sample size was not good enough and there were gender differences in educational level and age from the current sample, the buffering effects were confirmed. That is, the only buffering factor of family support was confirmed for the male patients and it occupied about 11% of explained variance for the suicidal ideation. In addition, there were two buffering factors of spirituality and family support for the female patients. Interestingly, in the female sample, the ratio of variance explained for the spirituality was almost 55% and that of family support about 3%.

우리나라 자살률을 살펴볼 때 60대 이상 노인계층의 비율은 최근 매우 빠르게 증가하고 있는데, 이는 다른 사망원인들보다도 훨씬 더 주요한 원인으로 부각되고 있다. 이와 같은 노인들의 자살을 예방하기 위해서는 그들이 지닐 수 있는 자살 충동 그리고 그와 같은 충동을 완화시켜주는 변인을 확인할 필요가 있다. 본고는 기존의 연구들에서 밝혀진 사회적 지지나 영성의 자살 충동에 관한 완충적인 효과를 노인 외래환자를 대상으로 확인하려는 것이었다. 표집의 수가 충분하지도 않고 또한 학력이나 연령에서 성차가 있었던 표집이었지만, 그 완충적인 효과가 확인되었는데 흥미롭게도 성차가 나타났다. 즉, 남성은 가족지지가 자살 충동을 완충시키는 변인으로 드러났는데, 가족지지가 자살 충동의 변량의 11% 정도밖에 설명하지 못했다. 그 반면, 여성의 자살 충동을 설명하는 요인은 영성과 가족지지였는데, 그 중 영성이 자살 충동을 설명해주는 변량의 폭은 거의 55% 정도나 되었다
