What is Authority? -An Inquiry Based on Philosophical Anthropology- Park, Byoung-Jun (Sogang University) Today, some people denigrate and shout against authority, while other people are concerned about the bad side effects that result from the loss of authority. An incorrect understanding of authority stands behind these conflicting claims. Authority is not a human act that we can avoid even if we should like do. Authority is based on human nature, and it is one of the basic acts of human spirit. The philosophical study of authority is relatively insufficient in comparison with treatment of other philosophical concepts, especially if we consider its importance for human life. It is the primary aim of this paper to try to present a proper understanding of authority in philosophical inquiry. This paper deals with 1) the classic concept of authority, 2) the essential concept for authority from the viewpoint of philosophical anthropology and philosophical hermeneutics. Authority is based on human reason and the cognition of the truth. Authority is a concept that is basically different from the concepts of power and competence that usually require heteronomy or pressure. Authority is rather the positive power and influence that are based on the autonomous human nature acting in obedience to the truth. A right and resonable authority is built on the autonomous act of human reason as it recognizes and acknowledges the truth.

오늘날 한편에서는 탈권위를 외치며, 다른 한편에서는 권위 상실이 가져오는 부작용을 염려한다. 이런 상반된 주장의 배경에는 권위에 대한 잘못된 이해가 도사리고 있다. 권위는 탈피하고 싶다고 피해갈 수 있는 그런 임의적인 인간의 행위가 결코 아니다. 권위는 인간 본성에 근거한 인간의 본질적 행위 가운데 하나이다. 권위에 대한 철학적 연구는 권위가 인간의 삶에서 차지하는 비중을 고려할 때 다른 철학적 개념들에 비하여 미비한 편이다. 본고는 탈권위의 시대에 권위의 본질에 대한 철학적 성찰을 통하여 권위에 대한 올바른 이해를 시도하는데 그 일차적 목적이 있다. 권위의 본질 탐구를 위해서 먼저 권위의 고전적 개념 정의를 고찰할 필요가 있다. 또한 권위는 철학적 인간학, 해석학, 존재론, 형이상학 등 다각적인 접근이 필요한 개념이다. 이런 탐구를 통하여 권위가 궁극적으로 인간 이성과 진리 인식에 근거하고 있음이 드러난다. 권위는 진리에 근거한 긍정적 힘, 영향력이다. 진리를 인식하고 그것을 인정함 속에 권위가 드러난다.
