The objective of this study was to analyze qualitatively the characteristic of problem finding observed in elementary schoolchildren’s solving of practical arts problems. Research questions were: first, how do elementary schoolchildren find problems in the process of solving practical arts problems; and second, what course of action appears after problem finding in elementary schoolchildren’s solving of practical arts problem.
The subjects of this study were 7 sixth graders including 4 boys and 3 girls at S Elementary School in Yongin City, Gyeonggi-do. The problem solving task used in this study was ‘paper tower building’ used in Song Hyeon-soon’s (2001) research. Data were collected using observation, think aloud and interviews, and students’ activities in the course of problem solving were videotaped and transcribed. Collected data were analyzed and interpreted through transcription, data integration, classification, coding, etc.
Results obtained from this study are as follows.
1. How students find problems
The reasons that elementary schoolchildren find problems in the process of solving practical arts problems are lack of functions, lack of abilities to analyze the causes of problems, and difficulty in finding adequate solutions.
2. Children’s course of action after problem finding
In the results of analyzing the course of action observed after children’s problem finding in the course of solving practical arts problems, they solved found problems through the course of finding a problem → looking for the cause → finding the cause → looking for a method → applying the method, or finding a problem → looking for a method → applying the method. Among the 7 children, 4 who built a high tower tended to go through the stage of looking for a method rather than to go through the stage of looking for the cause. This suggests that, after finding a problem, the course of looking for the correct cause of the problem and solving it plays an important role in successful problem solving. Through this, we confirmed that it is more effective in solving a found problem to look for and find the cause of the problem, find solution, and apply it rather than to look for a method just after finding the problem.

이 연구의 목적은 초등학생이 실과 문제를 해결하는 과정에서 나타나는 문제발견 특성을 질적으로 분석하는데 있다. 연구 문제는 첫째, 실과 문제해결 과정에서 초등학생이 문제를 발견하게 되는 이유는 무엇인가? 둘째, 초등학생의 실과 문제해결 과정에서 문제발견 후 나타나는 행동 경로는 어떠한가? 이다. 이 연구의 대상은 경기도 용인시 S초등학교 6학년 아동 7명으로, 남학생 4명, 여학생 3명으로 이 연구에서 사용한 문제해결 과제는 송현순(2001)의 연구에서 사용한 ‘종이 탑 쌓기’ 이다.
이 연구에서 나온 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 초등학생이 실과 문제해결 과정에서 문제를 발견하는 이유는 기능 부족, 문제의 원인 분석능력 부족, 적절한 해결방안 모색의 어려움으로 정리할 수 있었다.
둘째, 실과 문제해결 과정 중 아동들의 문제발견 후 나타나는 행동경로를 분석한 결과 대부분의 아동들은 문제를 발견 후 문제발견→ 원인탐색→ 원인발견→ 방법탐색→ 적용 단계 또는 문제발견→ 방법탐색→ 적용의 단계를 거쳐 발견된 문제를 해결하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 7명의 아동 중 상대적으로 높은 탑을 쌓은 4명은 문제를 발견 후 원인탐색 단계를 거치는 비율이 방법탐색의 단계를 거치는 비율 보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 즉 문제를 발견 후 문제의 적절한 원인을 찾고 해결하는 것이 성공적인 문제해결에 큰 역할을 한다는 것을 시사한다.
