With the rapid progress of industrialization and urbanization, apartment buildings have become the major residential form and onggi(traditional Korean pottery) has gradually become distant from our everyday life. However, the recent years has witnessed the spread of well-being culture, an interest to interest in the traditional culture, and thus efforts to illuminate earthenware anew. Onggi is the most popular vessel used by all the classes being cheap and convenient to use. But it's been neglected in the history of Korean chinaware because it's everyday vessels. As people have taken interest in environment-friendly and organic agricultural products and foods these days, much attention has been paid to earthenware containing the ancestors' life and culture. This study reviewed the concepts and characteristics of onggi and devised and applied an educational program to help elementary school children understand onggi culture. The application led to the following meaningful conclusions in the aspect of art education; First, the program worked to promote the children's interest in and understanding of onggi ; secondly, they also understood the scientific superiority of breathing onggi ; and finally, they got to understand the traditional food culture by understanding the onggi culture.

산업화와 도시화가 급속히 이루어지면서 주거형태가 아파트로 변하면서 옹기는 우리 생활에서 멀어지기 시작했다. 근래에 와서 웰빙문화가 확산되고 우리 전통문화에 대한 관심이 고조되면서 옹기에 대한 재조명이 이루어지고 있다. 옹기는 모든 계층에서 사용했던 값싸고 쓰기 편리한 가장 대중적인 용기지만, 생활용기라는 이유로 그동안 한국 도자사에서 등한시 해 왔다. 조상들의 삶과 문화가 담겨있는 옹기가 근래에 와서 친환경, 유기농 농산물, 참먹거리에 관심을 가지면서 다시 각광을 받고 있다. 본 연구는 초등학교 고학년 학생들에게 옹기 문화를 이해시키는 방안을 모색하는데 있고, 이를 위해 옹기의 문화적 가치와 유래, 종류, 특성에 대해서 고찰하고, 옹기이해 지도 프로그램을 구안하여 적용하고 결과를 분석하였다. 프로그램을 적용한 결과 미술 교육적 관점에서 다음과 같은 몇 가지 유의미한 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 옹기에 대한 관심과 이해를 넓혔다. 둘째, 옹기 이해 프로그램을 통해 숨을 쉬는 용기로서 과학적으로 우수성을 이해했다. 셋째, 옹기문화의 이해를 통한 전통음식문화를 이해하는 기회가 되었다.
