Initial Reception and Translations of Madame Bovary in Korea. Interpreting and Translation Studies 13-2, pp. 101-120 This study starts with an observation by Even-Zohar, theorist of the Polysystem: "the very principles of selecting the works to be translated are determined by the situation governing the (home) polysystem." Accordingly this paper will consider the process by which the first Korean translation of Flaubert's Madame Bovary came to realization under the specific political, historical, and social situations of the target country, after it had been received in Korea. In other words, we will hint at possible connections between the birth of translations and the interference of other polysystems before and after the 1950s when the first Korean translation of the full text of Madame Bovary was published. We shall also analyze the particular features of each Korean versions of this novel published in the 1950s.
