This paper discusses evaluation principle and methods assessing student's achievement in moral education. It is focused on rationales for the study and development of new evaluation methods in moral education, especially methods and process assessing essay writing in moral classroom. Essay writing is defined as a writing that organized logically, elaborated, and supported by evidence. A good essay writing skills can promote learning and conceptual change in moral education, understanding of moral concepts, ability to analyze and comprehend moral issues of society, better ethical problem solving. And it can be a tool for ethical self-formation. To assess moral essay writing effectively, it is important to first develop effective evaluation criteria and establish evaluation process assessing essay writing and then validate them with respect to characteristics of moral education, goals of moral education, personalities of moral educated man etc.

도덕과 교육은 교과 교육학과 교과 내용학의 불균형 발전, 교육과정 및 교수․학습 방법에 대한 연구의 편중 및 도덕과 평가에 대한 연구 및 교육의 미발전이라는 문제점은 안고 있다. 2007년 개정 도덕과 교육과정에서 새로운 평가방법들이 제시되고 있다. 그러나 학교 현장에서 충실히 실행될 정도로 실제적인 연구 성과가 축적되어 있거나 현장 적합성, 활용의 편의성이 높고, 도덕과의 성격과 목표에 적합한 평가도구들이 개발되어 있지 않은 것이 현실이다. 이러한 점에서 도덕 학습의 결과를 객관적이고 공정하게 평가하고 도덕과 교육 프로그램의 개선에 기초 자료를 얻을 수 있는 평가 도구를 개발하고 타당도를 높이는 연구가 필요하다. 이를 위해 본 논문에서는 도덕과 평가의 특성, 도덕과의 성격, 도덕과의 목표, 도덕적으로 교육받은 인간의 특성에 적합한 평가 방안, 특히 도덕과 논술을 위한 평가 방안과 방법을 논의한다.
