One of the important goals of the undergraduate education is to encourage students to develop the capacity for critical judgment and to make responsible decisions. As members of the university community students are expected to learn and practice the ethical values and honor code developed by the institutions. In this paper I discuss the contents of “ethical reasoning” area courses, one of the eight required subject areas of general education curriculum at Harvard. I review the undergraduate student honor code and I explain the administrative policies, procedures, and sanctions involved in the cases of violation of the code at Harvard and University of South Carolina.
I offer a set of suggestions for establishing academic and campus life code of conduct for institutions of higher education in Korea.

학부생들이 자신의 삶을 독립적으로 꾸려 나가고 나아가 지성인으로서 바람직한 인격 성장을 도모하여 책임감 있는 사회인 그리고 사회적 리더로 살아가는 데 필요한 행동 규준 및 윤리적 지침을 제공하는 한편, 대학 생활 전반에서 학생들이 겪을 수 있는 사회적 문제와 어려움들을 방지하고 개선하기 위해서는 학습 및 행동 윤리 규정이 필요하다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 하버드 대학의 교양과정 8개영역의 하나인 “윤리적사고” (ethical reasoning) 영역의 교과목을 소개하고 학습 및 행동의 윤리 규정에 관한 사우스 캐롤라이나 대학 사례를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 한국대학공동체의 윤리 규정 설계 방향 및 내용에 대한 시사점을 도출했다. 하버드의 교양교육과정과 같이 인간사회의 가치, 윤리 및 도덕적 측면을 주제로 다루는 다양한 교과목을 필수적으로 이수하게 하는 접근 방식을 국내 대학에서도 고려해 볼 만하다고 생각한다. 4년간의 학부 교육과정과 캠퍼스 생활 전반에 가치와 윤리의 실천적 교육을 위한 가치교육과 규범, 운영과 지원체제 구축도 필요하다고 생각한다.
