This paper searches significance of the sound of Korean Traditional Reading Book(=Dokseoseong) and suggests importance of transmission of it. Interviewees of this research are living at Gyeongnam province of western section of Jiri Mountain. Common points of those persons' sounds are determined under the individual characteristics instead of cultural background. But this point needs much deeper researches. The sound has some significance in many sides. Basically it is regular bit sound, so could be said music. It is supported by the concept of akumena[phenomena of listening] not phenomena. It came from phenomenology. Relating to Dokseoseong, this paper suggests some points as follows: Firstly, it is very necessary to make manual for collecting the sound in all provinces as soon as possible. Secondly, it should be applied to traditional cultural education, the result of it, its certified effect be spread. Thirdly, to preserve its value, it is necessary to make law relating to Dokseoseong. With those points, the way of Dokseoseong as self training sound of Korean traditional scholar(=Seonbi) and its capable keeper should be managed under the name of cultural assets.

이 논문은 한문 독서성의 의의를 탐색하고 그 전승의 중요성을 강조한다. 분석 대상자인 독송자들은 지리산의 경남지역에 거주하고 있다. 연구대상자들의 독서성 형태를 통해 발견할 수 있는 공통된 특징은 여타의 문화적인 배경에 의해 지배되기보다는 개인적인 특성에 의해 그 소리값이 더 많이 결정된다는 점이다. 이를 위한 통계적 실증연구는 추후 면밀히 이루어져서 보완되어야 한다. 한문 독서성은 여러 가지 측면에서 의의를 갖는다. 기본적으로 독서성은 규칙적인 소리이기 때문에 음악적 요건을 구비하고 있다. 하지만 독서성은 유희적 성격이 강한 음악적 특징이라기보다는 도덕적 수양 과정에서 문자적 본질(=경전)과 삶의 체험 사이의 중간에 위치하고 있다고 보여진다. 또한 현상학적 개념을 동원하여 시현상(視現象) 일변도로부터 소외된 청현상(聽現象)의 지위를 강조하고 있다. 향후 독서성과 관련하여 몇 가지 제안하고자 한다. 우선 학문적인 연구를 위해 자료채집을 위한 매뉴얼을 하루 속히 마련하고, 전국단위의 사료수집에 나서야 한다. 둘째, 전통문화 교육의 현장에 독서성을 적용하고, 그 효과를 검증하여 더 많이 보급할 수 있도록 해나가야겠다. 셋째, 독서성의 가치를 보전할 수 있는 법령적인 보완 노력을 해야 한다. 이러한 점을 감안하여 선비들의 자기수양의 소리라고 할 수 있는 독송음 또는 독송보유자를 문화재의 범위에 포함하여 체계적인 전승이 될 수 있도록 관심을 기울여야 하겠다.
