Parents are devoted in bring-up their children. Their roles are growing-up, a model of life, and educational guidance. In the period of children’s growth, books are specific media substituting for parents’ role. In particular, this intervenes in the selection of books and the interpretation of their contents. The purpose of this research is to make clear ‘mythologies’ of parents who expect their children to grow up successfully. This research adopts as a scope the cover of books for children ranked as the 1st to the 10th ranked as a bestseller. This research selects as a methodology mythologies of Roland Barthes. This methodology is a framework that enables us to understand how denotation (i.e. objective meaning) is mythologized as connotation(i.e. meaning in which subjectivity intervenes) This research found the following five types of mythologies: “overcome of assignment’, ‘comprehension of social role according to age’, ‘father’s role’, ‘absence of impossibilities’, and ‘self as a center of the world’. These types were positive mythologies related to children’s growth which parents judged. These meanings will function as mythologies which instill spirits of independence, pride and challenge and understanding of their roles in their heart.

자녀양육에 있어 부모는 헌신적이다. 이때의 역할은, 생장(生長), 삶의 모델, 학습 지도이다. 이 과정에서 책은 부모의 역할을 대신해주는 특수한 미디어이다. 특히, 책의 선택과 내용해석에 개입한다는 점에서 그러하다. 연구목적은 이와 같이 자녀에게 기대하는 부모들의 ‘신화(Mythologies)’ 규명이다. 연구대상은, 베스트셀러에 오른 1위부터 10까지의 유아용 도서 표지(book-cover)이다. 연구방법은, 바르트(Roland Barthes)의 신화론으로, 객관적 의미인 외시의미(dénotation)에 어떻게 주관성이 개입된 함축의미(connotation)로 신화화가 되는지를 이해하게 해주는 도구이다. 규명된 신화의 유형들은 ‘과제의 극복’, ‘연령에 따른 사회적 역할의 이해’, ‘아빠의 역할’, ‘불가능의 부재’, ‘세상중심으로서의 자신’등 이었다. 이것은 부모가 판단한 유아의 성장과 관련된 지향성을 갖는 신화였다. 이러한 의미작용들은 자녀들에게 자립심, 자존감과 도전정신 그리고 역할의 이해를 심어주는 신화로 작용할 것이다.
