This study purposed to survey Korean people’s thought about technology and to derive meaningful implications related to technological literacy. In order to collect data, the questionnaire developed by ITEA(2004) was translated and conducted a questionnaire survey rather than a telephone survey due to the circumstance of research. The questionnaire was composed of 16 questions mainly on technological literacy. The questionnaires were distributed to citizens aged over 18 in the Incheon area, Korea, and 680 of them were recovered. From the results of analyzing the questionnaires were drawn conclusions as follows. First, Korean people recognized the necessity of technology education in school and the necessity of technological literacy. This result suggests that technology education in daily life is demanded although the status of technology education is getting lower in school. Second, Korean people recognized the necessity of knowledge about various technology-related works. In addition, they regarded technological abilities in daily life as important but could not distinguish among technology, science and engineering clearly. Third, Korean people lacked accurate knowledge of technology in daily life, so they were in need of technological literacy education. That is, they had some misconceptions in their basic knowledge about daily used goods such as mobile phone, microwave oven, radio, pharmaceuticals, Internet, and fuel cell. Lastly, Korean people perceived that decision making on technology and technological literacy would have huge impacts on society and environment, so they recognized the necessity of technological literacy. They were interested in many technological issues, but their knowledge of such issues was not sufficient.

이 연구는 우리나라 사람들의 기술에 대한 생각을 조사하여 기술적 소양(technological literacy)에 관한 의미 있는 시사점을 도출하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구 자료를 얻기 위하여 2004년도 ITEA에서 만든 설문지를 번역하여 사용하였으며, 연구의 여건 상 전화 조사가 아닌 설문조사 방식을 택하였다. 설문지는 16개 문항으로 구성되었으며 주로 기술적 소양에 관한 내용이다. 한국의 인천지역 18세 이상의 시민을 대상으로 설문조사를 한 결과 680부가 회수되었다. 설문자료를 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 연구의 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 우리나라 사람들은 학교교육에서 기술교육이 필요하며 기술적 소양이 필요함을 인식하였다. 이러한 결과는 우리나라 학교교육에서 기술교육의 위상이 점점 더 낮아짐에도 불구하고, 생활에서의 기술교육이 필요함을 시사한다. 둘째, 우리나라 사람들은 다양한 기술과 관련된 일에 대한 지식이 필요하다고 인식하였다. 또한 생활에서의 기술적 능력이 중요하다고 생각하면서도 기술, 과학, 공학과의 차이점에 대해 분명하게 알지 못했다. 셋째, 우리나라 사람들은 일상생활에서의 기술에 대한 정확한 지식이 부족하여 이에 대한 기술적 소양교육이 필요하다. 즉 일상생활에서 늘 접하고 사용하고 있는 휴대폰, 전자레인지, 라디오, 의약품, 인터넷, 연료전지 등에 대해 기본적인 지식에 부분적으로 오류를 가지고 있었다. 마지막으로, 우리나라 사람들은 기술과 기술적 소양에 대한 의사결정이 사회와 환경에 큰 영향을 미칠 것으로 인식하여 기술적 소양이 필요함을 인식하고 있었다. 많은 기술 관련 주제에 대하여 관심은 있지만 이와 관련된 지식은 충분하지 않았다.
