The roads between the Tongshinsa departure from Hanyang to Kangho in Japan that was Japanese politicalㆍeconomicalㆍcultural center of those days are called 'envoys' roads'. According to the roads, there were cultural exchanges between Joseon and Japan and also between cultures of Hanyang and countryside. Cultural exchanges in Joseon were centered on the 'Gaek-sa' around the 'government offices'. Cultural exchanges between the 'Tongshinsa' and 'local literary men' can be divided into two phases in the aspect of the 'subject' and 'object' of the performance culture. First is 'performance' to console envoys at 'Euiryeyeonhyang (ceremonial banquet)' by 'official dancing girls' belonging to Kyobang and 'court musicians'. Second is local 'performance' for the countryside people held by 'Musangjaein' to be dispatched as members of envoys. These two phases' exchanges were made mainly by means of banquets to console the Tongshinsa. But in these performances, local literary men, intellectuals and the people of those days participated, and thereby they became sites for exchanging central culture centering on 'the Tongshinsa' from the central region and local culture.

통신사가 한양을 출발하여 당시 일본의 정치ㆍ경제ㆍ문화의 중심지였던 江戶에 이르는 길을 ‘통신사 길’이라고 한다. 이 길을 따라서 조선과 일본의 문화가 교류하였고, 한양의 문화와 지방의 문화가 교류하였다. 조선에서의 교류는 ‘관아’ 주변에 위치한 ‘객사’를 중심으로 이루어졌다. ‘통신사’와 ‘지방 문예인’과 교류를 공연문화의 ‘주체’와 ‘대상’의 측면에서 구분하면 ‘의례연향’에서 교방에 소속된 ‘기녀’와 ‘악공’이 통신사를 위로해주기 위해 행한 ‘공연’과 통신사의 일원으로 파견되는 중앙의 ‘馬上才人’이 지방에서 지방민들을 향해 행한 ‘공연’이 있다. 이러한 공연은 통신사를 위로하는 연회에서 이루어졌지만, 이 공연에 당시의 지방 문예인과 지식인, 백성들이 참여함으로써 중앙에서 내려온 ‘통신사’를 중심으로 하는 중앙의 문화와 지방의 문화가 교류하는 場이 되었다.
