As serial violent crimes committed by a certain criminals have increased, cases which are difficult to be solved by general investigation methods often occur these days. Because of this fact, there are growing civil fear and distrust in investigating ability of the police. Therefore more scientific ways of crime investigation are needed to cope with more sophisticated, brutal and intelligent crimes effectively. Geographic profiling is one of the crime investigation methods. It analyzes serial crime spots. It is a kind of strategic approaches that help criminal detectives charge of serial murders, sexual assaults, arsons and bombing cases. This research deals with serial violent crimes happened in Korea recently and analyzes the spatial characteristics of serial violent crimes according to the geographic profiling method and previous advanced studies from abroad. Due to the limitation of approaching to the enough basic data, just several cruel cases broadcast nationwide were dealt with. With difficulties of obtaining enough research materials such as data sampling, demography and correct addresses related, this analysis was not perfectly reached. Therefore the more scientific and sophisticated study should be followed.

특정 강력범죄자에 의하여 저질러지는 연쇄범죄들이 최근에 증가하면서, 일반적인 수사기법으로 해결하기 어려운 사례가 빈번해졌다. 이로 인하여 시민들의 범죄에 대한 두려움, 형사사법기관에 대한 불신이 점증하고 있다. 교묘화, 흉포화 그리고 더욱 복잡해진 사건에 대하여 과학적 수사기법을 활용한 사건해결 노력이 긴요시 되고 있다. 본 연구는 지리적 프로파일링 기법 및 국내외 선행연구결과를 토대로 한국에서 최근 수년 동안에 발생한 연쇄강력범죄를 분석한 것이다. 지리적 프로파일링 기법은 연쇄살인, 연쇄강간 및 방화 등의 범죄현장을 분석하여, 용의자의 주거지 혹은 생활근거지 추정을 도와줌으로써 용의자 체포에 상당한 도움을 제공할 수 있는 전략적 접근이다. 본연구를 수행하는 과정에서 자료수집에 많은 어려움이 있었는바, 언론에 보도되어 그 범죄정황이 소상하게 밝혀진 대표적 사례들만을 주로 활용하였다. 연쇄강력범죄의 범행동기에 따라서 범죄자의 이동특성이 확연하게 구별된다는 것을 확인할 수 있었으며, 범행이 지속될수록 주거지 쪽으로 근접하는 경향성을 또한 확인하였다. 향후 보다 정확한 분석을 위해서는 많은 자료들을 대상으로 정교하고 과학적인 후속연구가 진행되어야 할 것이다.
