The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship of characters in and its meaning. The five main characters in the work were formed as real figures representing the Five Elements, respectively; Hwang Geuk meaning as the soil, Joo Bong Jin
representing as the fire, Ywong Jin Chun meaning as the tree, Ho Song Tae representing as the gold, Hyun Deok Moo representing as the water. applies the principles of coexistence and conflict in Five Elements to the interactions among the characters as well as their external appearances and clothes. In this study, the principles in Five Elements were examined through the meetings of main characters and their combat scenes. For instance, there were infinite trust and unity among several, main characters, while various problems happened because of subtle friction and tension among persons. That was based on the
principles of coexistence and conflict in Five Element, and then we can appropriately understand the relationship of the figures in the work. This study found the fact that their relationship was based on the frame of conceptional thought, the principles of Five Elements, not on the reality.
The reason why the relationship became a stereo-type pattern was the intention to maximize the effects of fictional imagination and entertain -ment. This means that is the work not only indicating the situation when writing novels became a routine custom and they repeatedly created, (but) also targeting the readers in middle and lower classes in consideration of the popularity.

본고는 <남정팔난기>의 인물 관계와 그 의미를 밝히는 것을 목적으로 삼았다. <남정팔난기>의 5명 복수 주인공들은 각각 오행을 형상화하고 있다. 황극은 토, 주봉진은 화, 용진천은 목, 호성태는 금, 현덕무는 수를 상징한다. 이들의 외모, 복색은 오행을 형상화하고 있는데, 인물 상호 관계에 있어서도 오행의 상생과 상극의 원리가 적용되고 있다. 이들의 만남과 전투 장면을 통해 오행의과 상생과 상극이
어떻게 기능하고 있는지 살펴보았다. <남정팔난기>의 복수주인공 사이에는 무한한 신뢰와 화합이 존재하기도 하고, 인물 간의 미묘한 긴장과 이로 인한 다양한 문제가 유발되기도 한다. 이는 오행의 상생과 상극의 원리에 기반한 것으로 인물 관계에 대한 적절한 이해를 도모할 수 있었다. 이들의 인물 관계가 실제성에 근거한 인물 관계가 아니라 오행의 원리라고 하는 관념적 사고의 틀에 근거하고 있다는 사실도 밝혀냈다. 인물 관계가 도식성을 띠게된 이유는 허구적 상상력이 확대되고 오락성을 극대화하고자 한 결과이다. 이는 <남정팔난기>가 소설 창작이 관습화되고 반복적으로 이루어진 상황을 의미하는것인 동시에 대중성을 고려한 중하층의 독자를 대상으로 한 작품임을 드러내는 것이다.
