The classification system of Confucian diagrams in this article is suggested to open the discussion about iconological studies on the diagrams.In order to establish the standards for distinction of Confucian diagrams from the icons or diagrams of other religion or culture principles and concepts of iconography and iconology are shortly examined, and three huge collections and their classification systems of Ming China, contemporary China, and Chosun Korea are also examined as useful examples. The classification system suggested here is not complete, but it is on the ground of the result of classifying the more than 5000 diagrams of Chosun Confucianism, so that it will be possible to invite the future discussion. Namely it is a system that will be able to classify all of the Confucian diagrams according to subject and content of each ones. Another possible classification system that will be along to the icons and forms of diagrams is left until the time when more studies about icons and forms of Confucian diagrams will appear. Sancaituhui, Sikuquanshutujian, and Isuyonwon are researched ofr the establishment of this system, which will be useful to arrange and study the Confucian diagrams from the contemporary viewpoint. This system consists of three large classification categories and 26 small ones under them. It must be necessary to be corrected and completed in the future with advanced research and studies. Therefore in that meaning this system should be the stepping stone for a more inclusive and better-prganized one.

본 연구의 유교 도상의 분류체계는 하나의 시안이며 향후 도상해석학에 관한 논의를 진전시키기 위해 제시된 것이다. 유교도상의 성격을 다른 도상들과 구분하기 위한 기준을 세우기 위하여 서양에서 시작된 도상학 및 도상해석학의 원칙에 관한 고찰을 하였고, 아울러『三才圖會』,『理藪新編』,『四庫全書圖鑑』의 도상분류 체계를 검토하였다. 여기서 제시한 분류는 완전한 것은 아니지만, 5,000건이 넘는 수의 조선시대 유학자들이 제작한 도상들을 정리하여 본 결과로 제시해 본 것이다. 즉 조선시대 유학자들이 제시한 도상들을 총체적으로 분류할 수 있는 체계를 도상의 주제와 내용에 입각하여 구성한 것이다. 도상의 형태와 상징에 대한 분류체계는 아직 선행 연구가 미비하여 시기상조인 까닭에 후일의 작업으로 미루어 놓는다. 도상의 주제와 내용에 따른 분류 체계를 구성하기 위하여『三才圖會』,『四庫全書圖鑑』,『理藪新編』 등의 자료집의 체제를 참고하였으며, 이들을 참고로 하여 현대의 관점에서 유교 도상을 효과적으로 정리하고 연구할 수 있는 분류 체계를 모색하였다. 그 결과는 대분류 3항과 소분류 26목으로 정리되었다. 향후 연구를 진행하면서 이에 대한 수정과 보완이 필요할 것이다. 그러한 의미에서 현재의 체계는 더 포괄적이고 정합적인 분류체계를 세우기 위한 논의와 연구의 발판으로 삼고자 한다.
