The recent Hollywood movie series ‘X-Men (2000-2009)’ was received with great enthusiasm as it faithfully conveyed brilliant imagination of the original comic book, thanks to the latest special make-up skills. Especially, the unique character of ‘Mystique’ who can easily replicate others’ voice and appearance was perfectly reproduced with aid of special make-up to adhere silicone cover to an entire body of the character. Use of silicone make-up is becoming increasingly more common in Korean movies as well. Some of the examples can be fleshier look of actress Jo An, who played a character of Um Hye-ju in the third episode of the ‘Horror at Girl’s High School’ (Whispering Corridors 3: Wishing Stairs, 2003)’ or alteration of actor Park Shin-yang between two
characters in ‘The Big Swindle (2004).’ While special silicone make-up becomes more popular and widespread, studies on the materia are hard to found as silicone is merely treated as one of the special make-up elements. The objective of the research is to organize basic data on silicone used for special make-up to help make-up specialists, as the data will be useful in understanding correct way of applying silicone and expanding its uses in innovative and original ways.
