A Study on the Introduction of Revolutionary Romanticism under the Japanese Imperialism - Focusing on Byron and Shelley -
Generally Korean Romanticism in 1920s is defined as either Emotional Romanticism or Abnormal Romanticism. Considering decadent trend of French symbolism which was accepted earlier by Kim, Eok(김억) and social atmosphere during the Japanese Imperialism period, this symptom is very natural. However, it cannot be denied that other kind of romanticism is considerably introduced. That is Revolutionary Romanticism. Revolutionary Romanticism has a basic attitude of optimistic expectation towards social progress. Therefore, it is all about liberation from restriction, individual freedom and desire for the new world. Byron and Shelley as well as Blake are the representative English poets of Revolutionary Romanticism. Especially, Byron and Shelley known as Revolutionary Romanticist poets are weightily introduced into Korea extending from the 1920s to 1930s. Among their various works, The Prisoner of Chillon and Prometheus Unbound are most famous. These two works have main characters who acquire freedom from the rulers’ restriction. At that time this common theme represent for the Korean people the very liberation of Korea from the Japanese Imperialism. It is uncertain that whether The Prisoner of Chillon or Prometheus Unbound had directly influenced Korean poets during that period or not. However, the strong relations of The Liver by Yoon, Dong-ju with Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound can be observed from the character name Prometheus in the poem and the rabbit who acquires freedom from the Sea King(용왕) as well as the borrowing from the Prometheus myth. Moreover, the fact that Yoon was affected by the atmosphere at Yonsei University while attending English literature classes and the fact that he specialized in English Literature at Rikkyo University and Doshisha University while studying in Japan support their relations. Apart from the direct relations with The Prisoner of Chillon and Prometheus Unbound, there are some works which can be mentioned in terms of Revolutionary Romanticism. First of all, there is The Pulse of Joseon written by Yang, Ju-dong who majored in English Literature and so introduced Byron’s works. Yang emphasized the future revival of his country Korea with ‘baby’ in his poem. Has Spring Come in the Encroached Field?(< 빼앗긴 들에도 봄은 오는 가>) which uses metaphor in the title by meaning the liberation from the reality of colonization and Mountain Swallow which uses mountain swallow as a symbol of liberty are the representative poems of Revolutionary Romanticism. Nevertheless, unfortunately the number of related works is not that big. There are several reasons but the most significant one is because of harsh censorship during that period. Due to the harsh censorship, many works which took the negative view on the society failed to be published. However, the acceptance of Revolutionary Romanticism during the era of the Japanese Imperialism is a significant flow in the history of the Korean modern poetry.
