The confession which eliminates the crimes leads the practitioner to the attainment of Buddha. Tsong kha pa explains the confession by Seven Fold Offerings(七支供養) which makes the practitioner be purified and Four Powers(四力) which are the antidotes for erasing the crimes. The confession which is one of Seven Fold Offerings are explained in the stage of Preliminaries of Three Grades of Persons(三士) and Four Powers are explained in the way of Lower Grade Persons(下士道). The Three Grade of Persons should be understood as the Buddhist practical system and the way of Lower Grade Persons is only one way to reach the stage of the Higher Grade Persons(上士). So the practitioner should confess till attaining the enlightenment The pure practices of practitioner can be maintained when he keeps Prātimokṣa. Prātimokṣa is for self-discipline and the prerequisite for the Bodhisattva's Precepts. Tsong kha pa states that the Bodhisattva's precepts have the quality of correction after committing the crimes because of the merit of Bodhicitta. Zhi-yi(智顗) says that we can be purified of all crimes because of the Emptiness(Śūnyatā). Tsong kha pa's confession can be understood from a practical point of view and Zhiyi's confession can be served as a theoretical point of view. Therefore these thoughts help us understand the confession more systematically.

참회는 수행자가 이전에 지은 죄를 청정하게 함으로써 궁극적으로 불도수행을 완성할 수 있도록 이끈다. 쫑카빠는 참회와 관련하여 수행자를 청정하게 하는 칠지공양과 멸죄를 위한 대치인 四力의 내용으로 설명한다. 칠지공양의 한 부분으로서 설해지는 참회는 삼사도 이전 단계에서 설명되며 사력은 하사도에서 이뤄진다. 삼사도는 전체적인 불도수행의 체계로서 이해되어야 하고 하사도의 단계도 결국에는 상사도로 이끌기 위한 단계라는 점에서 참회는 수행의 마지막 단계까지 이뤄져야 하는 것이다. 수행자의 청정행은 바로 별해탈계를 수지하는데 있다. 별해탈계는 수행자 자신을 조율하고 성숙시키기 위한 것으로서 대승계의 전제가 된다. 쫑카빠는 계를 범했을 때 다시 청정해질 수 있는 근거를 보리심의 공덕으로 설명한다. 반면 지의는 계를 범했을 때 청정해질 수 있는 논리를 공성에서 찾는다. 이는 쫑카빠에게서 보이는 실천적인 측면과 함께 이론적인 근거로서 제시될 수 있다는 점에서 참회사상을 보다 체계적으로 이해할 수 있도록 도와준다.
