There has been very few empirical research conducted in the Korean American community in spite of its importance to the American criminal justice system. Accordingly, this study targets Korean American juveniles who are 13 to 18 years old and attend two largest Korean ethnic churches in the most populated county in a southwestern United States. The current study results in two observations. First, most of them agreed that the American police should actas public servants who take care of community problems. Second, informal collective security played the most determinant role in affecting their preference for the service-oriented policing strategy. Based upon these results, policy implications and recommendations for future studies will be presented in the following.

재미 한국인 지역공동체가 미국 형사 사법제도에 미치는 영향이 증대되고 있다는 것에 모두가 공감하고 있다. 하지만, 이 공동체에 대한 실증적인 연구물이 거의 없었다는 것 또한 사실이다. 따라서 본 연구는 재미 한국 청소년을 대상으로 하고 있다. 대상자들은 미국 남서부에서 가장 큰 카운티에 살고 있으며 한국인 목회자가 운영하는 교회에 다니고 있다. 그들의 나이는 13세에서 18세까지이다.
결과론적으로 본 연구는 두 가지 점을 발견하였다. 첫째는, 미국 경찰이 재미 한국인 지역 공동체에 있어서 경찰활동을 할 경우에는 서비스 중심의 전략을 펼쳐야 한다는 점에 대부분의 대상자들이 공감하였다는 것이다. 둘째는, 대상자들이 서비스 중심의 경찰활동 전략을 선호하는 데에 있어서, ‘사적 집단 안전감’이 가장 중요한 영향을 미쳤다는 것이다. 또한 이러한 영향은 통계학적으로 의미가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 정책적 함의와 향후 연구에 대한 시사점에 대하여 논해 보고자 한다.
