This paper is to review literature on the origin of the place name “Sea of Japan”, diffusion and settlement which has been studied in Japan since 1990. It is perceived in Japan that the name of “Sea of Japan”had been established by Western missionaries and explorers in the process of accumulating the geographical knowledge on Japan since 16th century. Named by Western people, the “Sea of Japan”started being settled down in Japan, too around late 19th and early 20th centuries. The initial diffusion of the name of“ Sea of Japan”throughout Japan at those periods had something to do with Rusian strategies of southward expansion, such as the construction of the Siberian railway and Russo-Japanese War. That is, Japan started using the name of“ Sea of Japan”officially in order to make sure that the sea belongs to Japan. On the other hand,“ Dong-hae (the East sea)”which had been used in Korea disappeared during the Japanese colonization. Instead,“ Sea of Japan”was used even in Korea. However, Japan argues that the“ Sea of Japan”has nothing to do with the colonization because it was initially named by western people.

현재 일본에서 일본해라는 지명은 16세기 이래 서양인 선교사와 탐험가들이 일본에 관한 지리적 지식을 축적하는 과정에서 생겨난 것으로 보고 있다. 그리고 이 지명이 서양에서 일본에 수입되어 정착하게 된 계기는 19세기 말에서 20세기 초반의 시베리아철도 부설, 러일전쟁 등 러시아의 남하정책과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 이와 같이 일본 제국주의 정책의 영향으로 한국에서 오랫동안 사용되어 왔던 동해라는 지명은 1910년에 완전히 소멸되고, 식민지 한국에서도 일본해라는 지명이 정착하게 되었다. 그러나 일본은 현재 국제적으로 통용되고 있는 일본해 지명에 대해서 서양인들에 의해 생성되고, 세계에 확산되었기 때문에 일본의 한국 식민지 지배와는 무관하다는 입장을 취하고 있다.
