While most of the research up to now relating to John Calvin has been conducted in the fields of systematic theology or the study of church history, it is important to remember that Calvin viewed himself mainly as a minister and a preacher. In this paper, I wish to focus upon Calvin’s methodology of biblical interpretation portrayed in his sermons by briefly addressing Calvin’s perspective of the Word of God as well as his philosophy of preaching.
Calvin’s sermons reveal four main characteristics that define his methodology of biblical interpretation. First, Calvin identified the goal of preaching as simply unfolding biblical text as it was, which set him apart from the approach offered by the medieval allegorical interpretation methodology. This emphasis upon the literal meaning of the text itself naturally inclined towards an interpretative methodology which sought to identify the author’s intent. Therefore, it was Calvin’s purpose in preaching to reveal the intent of the author through a literal interpretation of the biblical text. Second, Calvin refused to separate the literal authors of scripture from the Holy Spirit, the ultimate author of the Bible because the literal meaning of the text written by the authors reflected the meaning conveyed by the Holy Spirit.
Third, Calvin emphasized the absolute lordship and grace of God in each and every one of his sermons. This thematic focus naturally developed into preaching that was centered upon Jesus Christ. Fourth, Calvin’s aim was not merely to explain Biblical text; rather, he considered the function of a sermon to be fulfilled only when the Scripture was applied to the lives of the audience. Calvin was a revolutionist who utterly desired the total transformation of the daily life.
Finally, I have concluded this essay by summarizing upon Calvin’s life, his message, and it’s implications for a holy revival in the Korean Church fuelled by a pulpit upon which the Word of Truth is spoken.

Calvin에 대한 연구는 주로 조직신학이나 교회사에서 활발하게 이루어졌지만 Calvin은 자신의 주된 임무를 목회자요 설교자로 보았다. Calvin의 설교 연구도 설교에 대한 직접 연구보다『기독교 강요』나 주석을 중심으로 이루어져 왔다. Calvin이 전한 설교를 통해 그의 모습을 보기까지는 말씀의 해설가의 그의 모습을 진정으로 알기에는 한계가 있다. 필자는 본 논문에서 Calvin의 설교에 나타난 성경해석방법론에 관하여 연구하고자 한다. Calvin의 설교에 대한 이해를 위해 그의 성경관과 설교철학을 다루었다.
Calvin의 설교에 나타난 주해의 특징은 네 가지로 나누어진다. 먼저, Calvin은 본문을 그대로 풀어주는 것을 설교의 목적으로 삼았으며 이런 점에서 중세의 알레고리 해석에서 벗어났다. 본문의 문자의 의미에 대한 강조는 자연히 저자의 의도를 좇는 해석관을 낳았다. 문자에 근거하여 본문을 이해하는 방식은 전통적인 해석과는 다른 방식으로, 저자가 말하고자 하는 것을 명확하게 밝히는 것을 설교의 목적으로 삼았다. Calvin은 성경의 저자와 성경의 궁극적인 저자인 성령을 분리하는 것을 거부한다. 저자가 문자를 통해 하는 말씀이 성령이 주는 본래의 의미라는 것이다.
Calvin은 모든 설교에서 그리스도 안에서 나타나는 하나님의 주권과 은혜를 강조했다. 하나님의 주권과 절대적인 은혜에 대한 강조는 필연적으로 하나님의 은혜의 통로가 되는 예수 그리스도에게 집중되는 설교로 발전된다. 마지막으로 Calvin은 본문을 주해하는 것을 목적으로 삼은 것이 아니라 본문을 청중의 삶으로 적용하는 것을 목적으로 삼았다. Calvin은 성경을 바르게 살아가는 것을 강조함으로써 진정한 삶의 개혁을 이루고자 했던 삶의 개혁가였다. 마지막으로 본 논문의 연구를 간략히 요약하고 한국교회 강단에 진리의 말씀으로 말미암는 거룩한 부흥을 위해 오늘날 그의 삶과 메시지가 주는 교훈을 언급하였다.
