The knowledge on how the existing ideas are connected with each other for the creation of new ideas by extensive combination is the essential building block to enhance our knowledge of science itself. As an explanatory study in this long-term direction, we construct the keyword network of MIS research from the publication information from 1998 to 2008, and investigate its characteristics and the important keywords. The analysis presents a number of notable results. First, the MIS field has changed so fast that many new concepts have been introduced and therefore their connectivity is very sparse in spite of the large number of keywords. However, the connection of keywords is highly clustered. Second, there is a very clear power-law degree distribution of the keywords, which implies that a rich-get-richer mechanism works under the formation and evolution of the keyword network. Third, the important keywords differ across the measures of popularity and network centrality. We specify it as well as the difference across journals and the set of the important keywords itself.
