In spite of the fact that IT outsourcing has been repeatedly shown to improve firms' productivity, few studies of the strategic importance of IT outsourcing have been undertaken. This lack of research presents challenges to managers who desire to know precisely how their organizations can benefit from outsourcing. In order to better understand IT outsourcing, we investigate the unique competencies, capacities, and capabilities of firms that determining the IT outsourcing performance. Specifically, we explain that IT outsourcing process management capacity, core competency orientation, and relationship-specific investment influence the IT outsourcing client-vendor relationship. The quality of this client-vendor relationship, in turn, affects the performance of the IT outsourcing unit. Using data obtained from 200 organizations, we test our research model using structural equation modeling techniques and present empirical evidence supporting our hypotheses. The results provide a new insight on IT outsourcing by drawing on the strategic orientation-performance framework. This perspective emphasizes the role of strategic decision making, and brings a novel perspective to research on outsourcing.
