Relations between North and South Korea has been shifting from the Cold War to an era of reconciliation and cooperation, which directly or indirectly will influence the unification education. In this change, the unification education in an social education institution have developed the direction of the diversify and specificity. In relation to this change, the purpose of this study is to carry out research on the improvement of the unification education in an social education institution. For this purpose, to begin with, this study is to analysis the actual conditions of the unification education in social education institutions. The analysis institution contains a lot of public and private organization, for example, Education Center for Unification, a public body and a private organization in relation to unification education. On the basis of this analysis, this paper is to provide an improvement method. For the improvement of the unification education in an social education institution, this study, first, program development and management on the basis of the core capacity, second, a conquest of a confusion of the educational contents, third, revision of the support law of unification education, fourth, an increase and execution of the educational budget, fifth, betterment of network.

냉전으로부터 화해와 협력으로의 남북관계의 전환은 직간접적으로 통일교육에 영향을 주어 왔다. 이러한 변화 속에서 사회 교육기관에서 이루어지는 통일교육 또한 다양성과 전문성의 측면에서 발전해 왔다. 이와 관련하여 본 연구는 사회 통일교육의 개선 방향을 탐색하기 위해 현재 사회 교육기관에서 이루어지고 있는 통일교육 실태를 민간주도의 통일교육과 공공기관 주도의 통일교육으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 그리고 이러한 분석을 토대로 현행 사회통일 교육 실태를 평가하고, 나아가 그 개선방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 사회통일교육의 발전을 위한 개선 방향으로는 기관의 핵심 역량에 따른 통일교육 프로그램 개발 및 운영, 통일교육 내용 상의 혼란 극복, 사회 통일교육 관련 통일교육 지원법의 개정, 교육예산의 증액과 효율적 활용, 통일교육 관련 네트워크의 개선 등으로 제시하였다.
