The Gan-Jae Academy was organized in 1989, with the name 'Studies Institute of Gan-Jae Thought' originally. After it is re-established to its current state in 2000, the name of transactions was also changed from 'Thesis on Study of Gan-Jae Thought' to 'Thesis on Gan-Jae Philosophy.' The former mainly focuses on the establishment of Gan-Jae himself, while the latter expands its view over Gan-Jae as well as his followers. So far, the academy released 50 transactions about Gan-Jae Thought, 21 about nineteen followers of his, and three about his preceptor, Lim Heon-Hoe. It also read 12 papers for International Congress of Zhuxi Philosophy. This article aims at reviewing how Gan-Jae Thought is succeeded and developed by his followers, through Gan-Jae Academy's achievements made so far. We find out that his followers have been rather faithfully take over their mentor than using their originality. It has both merits and demerits; the virtue being that it has contributed to the preserve the integrity of tradition, while the shortcoming being it is vulnerable to be led into the hidebound philosophy, or dogmatism. In short, the history of development of Gan-Jae Philosophy has been rather inclined toward conservation than advancement. It is high time that the followers of Gan-Jae and the Eastern Philosophers struggled on the creative succession and modernization of Gan-Jae Philosophy.

간재학회는 1989년에 설립되었다. 당시의 이름은 간재사상연구회였다. 2000년 간재학회로 재편되면서, 학회지의 이름도 『艮齋思想硏究論叢』에서 『艮齋學論叢』으로 바뀌었다. 전자의 경우, 간재 한 사람에 연구의 초점을 맞추고 있다면, 후자의 경우에는 ‘간재학’이라는 명칭에서 보듯이 간재는 물론 간재문인 전반에 관한 연구로 시야가 확장된다. 지금까지 간재학회지에 발표된 것을 보면 艮齋사상에 대한 논문이 50여 편, 艮齋 門人 19명에 대한 21편의 연구 논문이 있고, 그 외 간재의 스승 全齋 任憲晦에 대한 것 3편, 주자학 국제학술대회 관련 논문 12편이 있다. 이 글은 이 연구 성과를 중심으로 간재사상이 어떻게 艮門에서 계승되고 전개되는가를 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 그 작업을 통해 우리는, 艮門 弟子들의 사상은 창의적이라기 보다는 스승 艮齋의 설을 충실히 계승하고 발양하는 것임을 알게 된다. 이는 양면적인 특징을 지닌다. 긍정적 요인은 전통을 온전하게 보존하는데 기여했다는 점이고, 부정적 요인으로서는 지나친 보수성과 도그마에 빠지기 쉽다는 점이다. 요컨대 간재학파의 사상 전개의 歷程은 그런 의미에서 ‘發展’이라기보다는 ‘墨守’적 의미가 더 강하게 클로즈 업 된다. 간재학의 창의적 계승과 현대화를 위해 艮門과 동양철학 연구자들이 매진해야할 차례인 것 같다.
