This paper addresses the issue of nuclear armament during the Cold War era under special consideration of the West-German nuclear participation within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). By analyzing sources and documents of the leading lights in this process, it demonstrates the political imperative of the West-German Government to take part in the Nuclear Planning Group (NPG), which was institutionalized in 1966. Furthermore, the paper covers the points of views of the US Government supporting a West-German nuclear participation as well as the French concerns about it. This paper does not only provide the political-historical background of the German nuclear participation during the Cold War era, but also addresses the dire necessity for a revision of the NATO nuclear structures, which are - 20 years after the collapse of the Eastern bloc - still unmodified existing.
