The study aims to examine internationalization of institutions for teacher education, to compare with cases in other countries and to seek for suggestions to improve quality of Korean teacher education colleges and universities. Korea moves rapidly into multiculral and pulral society under the influence of globalization. The increase of foreign labors, and multicultural family, and students with international experience urged teachers to be prepared with global competence. However, the study pointed out that current teacher education institutions are not geared toward internationalizing their education yet. Based on the three comparative case analyses of Japanese, French, and Australian teacher education institutions and SWOT analysis of Korean one, the study suggested as followings. First, the teacher education institutions are required to built a concrete objectives and effective strategies. Second, administrative and financial supports as well as infrastructure for internationalization must be prepared to integrate international components into curriculum and programs for teacher education. Third, from the long term perspectives, teacher education system needs drastic reform to enhance competitiveness of public education as well as to cope with the demand of social changes toward globalization.

이 연구는 국내 교원양성기관의 국제화 실태를 진단하고, 해외 교원양성기관의 대표적 국제화 사례와의 비교·분석을 통하여 국내 교원양성기관의 교육 분야 국제화 방안을 탐색 및 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구결과, 국제화와 다문화 시대에 맞는 교육의 필요성을 높이고 그에 부응할 수 있는 교원양성을 증진시키기 위해, 첫째, 교원양성기관 국제화에 대한 국가적 전략이 필요하다. 둘째, 이러한 전략 수립을 바탕으로 교원양성기관의 교육 분야 국제화를 뒷받침 할 수 있는 구체적인 행·재정 지원 정책 수립과 국제화 시대에 맞는 교원양성이 되도록 교육과정 및 프로그램, 각종 인프라를 강화해 가야 할 것이다. 셋째, 장기적인 관점에서는 교원양성체제의 근본적인 개편이 필요하다. 교원양성체제 개편의 움직임은 지속적으로 제기되어 왔으나, 복잡한 양성체제의 특성상 이해집단간의 합의가 어렵다는 문제점을 안고 있었다. 따라서 체계적이면서도 경직되지 않는 효율적인 형태로의 구조 변화가 장기적이면서 치밀하게 실현되어야 한다.
