As today’s universities enter a stage of major transitions, the question of how we will carry out general education is an important one. This paper seeks to find answers to this question by discussing the essence of general education and new visions regarding the issue, as experienced by the general education program at Ewha Womans University.In the history of mankind, universities has continued to communicate and grow with the times while at the same time maintaining autonomy in its search for truth. What has prevailed throughout is its role in preserving and developing humanity, wherein lies the importance of general education. For an effective general education program, however, there are obstacles that must be overcome, including the dependence of universities on government support; problems in evaluation index; and the tendency among mid-career faculty to avoid teaching general education courses.Ewha Womans University has long been playing a pioneering role in improving the general education curriculum in Korea. Currently, under our new vision, “Initiative Ewha,” we are reorganizing Ewha’s general education program in preparation for a new era. The main focus of this reform lies in cultivating competent individuals who can respond proactively in the face of fast change in our increasingly complex and diverse society, and one of the first steps we took was to enhance the students’ communication skills in Korean and fluency levels in English. We also established a core curriculum in our general education program to provide the opportunity for students to study a wide range of topics, perspectives and methodology, with aims to develop analytical and thinking skills. As a means to strengthen character education and other basic learning, we founded the General Education Institute, which will be in charge of providing a program in character education appropriate for our globalized times. All this will allow us to play a major role in discovering and nurturing new talent for the 21stcentury.

오늘날 대학이 직면한 중대한 전환기에 교양교육을 어떻게 전개해 나갈 것인가는 매우 중요한 문제제기이다. 본고에서는 교양교육의 본질, 이화여자대학교의 기초교양교육 경험 및 그 비전을 논함으로써 이에 대한 해답을 구해보고자 하였다. 인류의 역사에서 대학은 진리탐구의 자율성을 유지하면서, 끊임없이 시대와 호흡하고 발전해왔다. 이러한 역사 발전을 통해 대학교육에서 무엇보다도 중요하게 여겨야 할 것은 인간을 참되게 만드는 역할이었다는 점을 확인할 수 있었으며, 이것이 바로 교양교육에 중점을 두어야 할 이유이기도 하였다. 그러나 대학 교양교육이 제대로 실시되기 위해서는 국가의 지원에 의존적인 대학의 현실, 평가지표의 문제, 중견급 교수들의 교양과목 담당 기피 등이 반드시 극복되어야 할 필요가 있다. 이화여자대학교에서는 그동안 국내 대학들에게 교양교육체계의 개혁적인 내용을 제시하면서 선도적인 역할을 하여온 전통이 있다. 그리고 지금은 ‘이니셔티브 이화’의 기치 아래 새로운 시대에 대비하기 위한 교양교육의 개편을 실시하고 있다. 그 중심 내용은 현대 사회의 복잡성과 다양성 등의 급격히 변화하는 시대적 상황에 능동적으로 대처할 수 있는 인재를 길러 내는 것이며, 이를 위해 우선 우리말 소통능력 및 영어 구사력을 강화하고자 하였다. 그리고 핵심교양교육과목을 두어 폭넓은 주제와 내용을 익히고 다양한 시각과 방법을 접할 기회를 제공하며, 분석적․종합적 사고 능력을 배양하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 교양교육원을 설립하여 인성 교육 및 기초교육을 강화하기 위한 장치를 마련하였다. 그리하여 글로벌 시대에 걸맞은 인성 교육을 담당하여 21세기 인재를 길러내는 핵심교육의 역할을 해나가고자 한다.
