This paper discusses about the characteristics and the problems of the secondary teacher employment test and its influence on the academic status of social studies education. Also, this paper examines the major traits of the new teacher employment test which emphasizes test takers?abilities to apply their knowledge in real classroom situations. The Korean teacher employment test can be characterized as a high stake test. However, the test has revealed a problem of low validity and reliability by putting too much emphasis on difficulty and discrimination. Further, the majority of objectives in social studies teacher education is hard to be measured by standardized forms of question items. To solve these problems, the new teacher employment test system standardized test objectives and teacher qualification requirements. Also, the new test included the teaching performance test to increase the validity. However, the new test is still exposed to the problem of reliability.

본 논문에서는 고부담시험으로서의 중등임용시험의 특징과 문제점을 살펴보고 이 시험의 도입이 사회과교육학의 위상에 어떤 영향을 주었는지 살펴보았다. 특히 최근에 도입된 새로운 임용시험 방식이 가진 특징과 문제점, 사회과교육학의 위상에 미치는 영향을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 고부담시험으로 치러지는 중등임용시험은 난이도 조정 문제 때문에 타당도와 신뢰도를 확보하기 어려운 문제가 있으며, 고부담시험의 문항으로 제작되기 어려운 교과교육의 여러 영역을 포함시키고 있기 때문에 교사의 전문성을 제대로 측정하기 어려운 문제가 있다. 새로운 임용시험제도는 이를 극복하기 위해 교사자격기준을 표준화하고 평가요소를 상세화·표준화하는가 하면 수업실연평가를 포함하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 시도가 시험의 타당도를 높이는데는 도움이 될 수 있지만, 신뢰도 문제를 해결하기에는 여러 가지 문제가 있으며, 교과교육학의 비중이 지나치게 증가하여 오히려 문항의 질이 떨어지는 문제점을 안고 있다.
