Lee Saek proceeded the discussion about a given thesis by the way of seeing through the theory of the Chinese classics based on the original sentences and annotations of Chengzhu程朱 while he has been interpreting the Chinese classics. He stated the scholarly attainments and public effect of the sages of old focused on the 《Lunyujizhu論語集註》 in a poem he wrote after he had taught King Wuwang 禑王 the 《LunyuㆍTaibai論語ㆍ泰伯》. And he thought 《Zhongyong中庸》 as a mind law of the Confucian's followers who had tried to connect human's law with heaven's law and systematically spreaded Zhonghelun中和論 based on the contents of Joohee's annotations of 《Zhongyongzhanggou中庸章句》. the first chapter’ in 〈Baizhongshuo伯中說〉. And then he spreaded Yangdao陽道 and made it the goal of his life to practice the true gentlemanship and sent out the idea of the science of divination based on the annotations of 《IchuanㆍFugua易傳ㆍ 復卦》 by Chengyi程頤 in 〈Zifushuo子復說>. And he thought 《Shijing詩經》 could change people and improve public morals, and systemized the politics of the saint ara, completed by Wenwang文王 and Zhougong周公, with poetry.
When he interpreted the Chinese classics he didn't limit his thoughts only the theoretical research but showed the strong will to practice them to the real politics. His practical scholarly thought related with Chinese classics like this began from his political idea to practice the politics of the sages of old and prevent the unfaithful and immoral people from gaining power and restore the old customs and manners at the turning point in history when Won changed to Ming and Koryeo changed to Choson. Particularly his practical scholarly view greatly effected his colleagues who have been lecturing the 5 Chinese classics with him in Sungkyunkwan成均館 as Instructors, or the scholastic officers and helped them understand and practice Chengzhuxue程朱學. systematically. As we can see from this Lee Saek's study related to the Chinese classics became a trigger that made the scholars of Sungkyunkwan at that time understand the annotations of Chengzhu thoroughly and reinterpret it with their own point of view and by these procedures, they could build and deepen their own life philosophy and political ideology. Because of this, Lee Saek's Thought of the Confucian classics is very important to understand the development and characteristics in the times of the end of Koryeo and the beginning of Choson.

이색은 경서를 해석하면서 주로 하나의 명제가 주어지면 경서의 원문과 정주의 주석에 기초하여 경서의 이론을 회통하는 방식으로 논의를 진행하였다. 그는 우왕에게 《논어ㆍ태백》을 진강하고 지은 시에서 주희의 《논어집주》를 중심으로 성인의 학문과 공효를 말하였다. 또한 그는 《중용》을 하늘의 도와 인간의 도를 연결한 공문(孔門)의 심법(心法)으로 이해하고, 〈백중설(伯中說)〉에서 주희가 《중용장구ㆍ제1장》을 주석한 내용에 기초하여 중화론(中和論)을 체계적으로 펼쳤다. 이어 그는 양도(陽道)를 발양하여 군자의 삶을 실천하는 것을 인생의 목표로 삼고, 〈자복설(子復說)〉에서 정이의 《역전ㆍ복괘(復卦)》를 주석한 내용에 근거하여 역학적 사유를 펼쳤다. 그리고 그는 《시경》이 사람들을 풍화하여 사회의 풍기를 개변시킬 수 있을 것으로 생각하고, 문왕과 주공에 의해 완성된 성인 시대의 정치를 시로 형상화하였다.
이색은 경서를 해석하면서 이론적 탐색에만 머물지 않고, 이를 현실 정치에 구현하겠다는 강력한 실천 의지를 보여주었다. 이와 같은 그의 실천적 경학사상은 원에서 명으로 교체되고 고려에서 조선으로 바뀌는 역사적 전환기를 맞아, 소인들의 발호를 막고 고풍을 회복하여 성인의 정치를 실현하겠다는 경세관에서 비롯된 것이다. 특히 그의 실천적 경학사상은 당시에 성균관에서 그와 함께 5경을 나누어 강설했던 학관들이 정주학을 체계적으로 이해하고 실천하는 데에 큰 영향을 주었다. 이로 보아 이색의 경학사상은 당시 성균관에 모여 경서를 토론했던 학자들이 정주의 주석을 깊이 이해하여 각자의 입장에서 재해석하는 사색경로를 거치고, 이 과정을 통해 각자의 인생철학과 정치이념을 구축, 심화시키는 기폭제가 되었다는 점에서 여말선초 경학사상의 전개와 특징을 이해하는 데 매우 중요하다.
