Nowadays, CAD/CAM is going beyond the basic concept of a design tool and is settling as a tool to play various roles from the manufacturing of the prototype, production to management. But in the case of the ceramic business, except for the production of earthenware and tiles, its use for the production of dishware and other products is meek. Also, the firms using the tool use it for only a few products and the use is confined to the basic stage of design and modelling. When it comes to using the tool, there is a clear distinction between the roles of designers, modelling and mock-up engineers.
Currently, the CAD/CAM system can be used for the production of creative forms from intuitive thinking and for work that require precision and exact numerical values unlike the concern that it would be possible to use it only for simple forms based on geometrical forms when it was first introduced. As such, it is presenting new possibilities of production scope. Also, instead of alienating people, it increases the ability of human beings to control the tool as its managers, highlighting its importance as a tool for communication between functions with different roles. Therefore, this study investigates the tools and systems being applied in the ceramic industry, evaluates their impact on the design, manufacturing of the prototype and production, grasps the areas to be improved and attempts to provide basic material that can applied to small-scale ceramic industries.

오늘날 CAD/CAM은 디자인 도구라는 초보적인 개념을 뛰어넘어 모델링, 생산, 관리에 이르기까지 다양한 역할을 수행하는 도구로 자리 잡아 가고 있다. 그러나 도자 업체의 경우, 위생도기와 타일생산을 제외하고 식기 및 기타제품의 생산에는 적극적인 활용이 미흡한 실정이다. 또한 활용 업체의 경우에도 일부 제품만 활용되거나 디자인과 원형제작이라는 초보적인 단계에서 벗어나지 못하고 있는 실정이다.
그리고 도구의 활용 측면에서도 디자이너와 모델링, 목업 엔지니어의 역할 구분이 명확하다.
현재 CAD/CAM 시스템은, 도입 초기 기하학적 형태를 기반으로 한 단순한 형태의 생산만이 가능할 것이라는 우려와 달리, 직관적인 사고에 의한 창조적 형태까지 제작 가능하며 정밀성과 정확한 수치 작업까지 가능해지면서 생산영역의 새로운 가능성을 제시해 주고 있다. 또한 인간을 소외시키기보다 관리자로서 도구를 통제하는 인간의 능력을 증대시키며 역할이 다른 직능간의 의사소통 도구로서도 그 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 도자기 산업에 적용되고 있는 디지털 도구와 시스템의 현황을 조사하고 디자인, 원형제작, 생산에 미치는 영향을 평가하고 개선사항을 파악하여 소규모 도자 산업에 적용될 수 있는 기초 자료를 제공하고자 한다.
