This research presents the analysis of 10 cases that investigated, in detail, and analyzed, in depth, the inter-generational conflict between parents and college students in Korea. The focus of this study was on the real experiences of the participants and its close examinations into the process of actual conflicts in particular situations. Its theoretical basis was the assumption that the cause of a conflict lies in the relationships and the group where the individual belongs. Hence, this study treated and approached a family conflict as a complex problem created by various intertwined aspects of everyday life and collected as data actual daily communication revealed through various stories. Across the 10 case studies found were some cultural similarities as well as the unique features of each individual case. The important cultural aspects in common included father-daughter inter-generational value differences, communication patterns and parents’ high interest in their daughter’s academic achievement. Also, the uniqueness of each case was formed by participants’ personalities and relational as well as situational factors.

이 연구는 부모와 대학생의 세대 간 갈등에 관한 정성적인 탐사연구이자 실제 상호적 커뮤니케이션 과정에 초점을 맞춘 선도연구이다. 연구의 목적은 10개의 사례연구를 통해 구체적인 상황에서 부모 ‒ 대학생 세대 간 갈등이 형성, 유지, 발전되는 과정을 면밀히 조사해서 심층적으로 분석해보는 것이다. 이 연구의 이론적 토대는 갈등을 개인적인 문제가 아닌 상호 관계적 문제로 보는 의미조정관리이론이다. 따라서 가족갈등을 여러 가지 요소가 유기적인 관계 속에서 복합적으로 작용하는 다차원적인 문제로 간주하고 접근하였다. 10개의 사례연구에서 구체적인 문화적 공통점과 함께 개별 사례의 특이성(차이점)도 볼 수 있었다. 주로 문제가 되었던 문화적인 공통점은 부녀 간의 세대차이로 인한 가치관의 차이와 의사소통 방식의 문제점이 있었으며 자녀의 학업성취에 대한 부모의 높은 관심도도 중요한 문화적 요인으로 나타났다. 또한 각 사례의 특이성은 피면담자의 개인적 성향이나 관계적 또는 상황적인 요소 등의 영향으로 인한 것이었다.
