In this article, I analyze characteristics of two female villain deities in Jejudo bonp'uli(Myth of Jeju island, 제주도본풀이)by applying the concept of polyphony; the main characters are Noiljedaekuil-Ttal(노일제대귀일 딸) in the subcategory, Munjeonbonp'uli(문전본풀이) and Kuayangseangi-Cheo(과양셍이 처) in the subcategory, Chasabonp'uli(차사본풀이). These characters vividly portray a female villain archetype as avaricious, treacherous, licentious, and murderous. Despite these similar characteristics in both figures, they have their own unique representation through the narratives. For instance, Noiljedaekuil-Ttal’s wicked behaviors can position her as an antihero against the protagonist, Nokdiseanoin(녹디셍인), one of her step sons, who transcended into a benevolent deity. On the contrary, Kuayangseangi-Cheo’s behavior emblematizes chaos or disorder. More specifically, the character, Noiljedaekuil-Ttal demonstrates how her persona in the narrative can display multiple selves through frequent shape-shifting and trickeries to defeat her opponents. In the case of Kuayangseangi-Cheo, her character demonstrates a female villain deity, who prevents prosperity, but creates chaos and disorder within the narrative: she falsely pretends to be a mother of three sons, but is eventually destroyed by the god of the underworld(염라대왕).

본 논문에서는 캐릭터가 작품 내적인 서사적 기능에 한정된 존재가 아닌 무한한 세계를 창조하는 존재라는 관점에서 제주도 본풀이 중 <문전본풀이>와 <차사본풀이>에 등장한 노일제대귀일의 딸과 과양셍이 처를 대상으로 악인형 여성신 캐릭터의 이미지에 대해 분석하였다. 노일제대귀일의 딸과 과양셍이 처가 갖는 전형적 악행의 성격은 탐욕, 유혹, 거짓, 살인으로 요약될 수 있다. 그런데 서사 내에서의 노일제대귀일의 딸의 악행은 그녀가 상대신에 대응하는 적대자로서 기능하기 위한 행위로 해석할 수 있다면, 과양셍이 처의 악행은 무질서, 혼돈을 상징하는 것으로 이해할 수 있다. 변복을 통한 불완전한 변신, 다수의 하찮은 생물의 집합체, 권모술수 등의 서사를 통해 노일제대귀일의 딸은 다중적 자아를 지닌, 상대자의 성격에 맞춰 다양한 악행을 범할 수 있는 캐릭터 이미지를 형성한다. 과양셍이 처는 삼형제의 가짜 어머니, 저승왕인 염라대왕의 이승행차를 통해 징치될 수밖에 없는 서사를 통해 풍요로움을 방해하고 무질서, 혼돈을 창출하는 캐릭터 이미지를 보이고 있다.
