In the current situation that suicide in our society was emerged as a serious social issue, the purpose of this study was to clarify factors that have influence upon suicide. It particularly paid attention to the influence of mass media as a cause for suicide by considering common people's suicide that has increased since the recent suicide of social celebrities such as entertainer and others. Accordingly, this study was progressed with two stages. first, it examined whether an individual's psychological and social influence, the attitude toward suicide that was formed by mass media, and the level of a suicide report have influence upon an individual's suicidal risk. Second, it examined whether there is difference in the influence of an individual's psychological and social factors upon suicidal risk depending on the suicide report of mass media. As a result of analysis, first, the causes, which have influence upon an individual's suicidal risk, were indicated to be depression in the psychological aspect and to be the attachment to school and the difficulty for employment in the social aspect. However, it was indicated that there is no direct influence by the mass media such as the suicidal attitude, which was formed by mass media, or as the suicide report in mass media. Second, as a result of examining the conditional effect by mass media, the group, which was formed the positive attitude toward suicide by mass media, was indicated that the influence of depression upon suicidal risk is bigger. In the above results, even if the direct influence of mass media is not indicated, it can have indirect influence upon the suicidal risk by mass media. Thus, the discreet attitude and neutral attitude in mass media are required in the suicide report.

자살이 심각한 사회문제로 대두된 현 상황에서 이 연구에서는 자살에 영향을 미치는 요인을 밝히고자 하였다. 특히 최근 연예인 등 사회 유명인의 자살 이후 증가하는 일반인의 자살을 고려하여 자살의 원인으로 대중매체의 영향력에 주목하였다. 따라서 이 연구는 두 단계로 진행되었는데 첫째, 자살의 원인으로써 개인의 심리적․사회적 영향력과 대중매체에 의해 형성된 자살에 대한 태도, 그리고 자살보도의 정도가 개인의 자살위험성에 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. 둘째, 개인의 심리적․사회적 요인이 자살위험성에 미치는 영향력이 대중매체의 자살보도에 따라 차이가 있는지를 살펴보았다. 분석결과, 첫째 개인의 자살위험성에 영향을 미치는 원인으로 심리적 요인으로는 우울증이, 사회적 요인으로는 학교에 대한 애착 및 취업의 어려움 등으로 나타났다. 그러나 대중매체에 의해 형성된 자살태도나 대중매체의 자살보도 등 대중매체에 의한 직접적인 영향력은 없는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 대중매체에 의한 조건적 효과를 살펴본 결과, 대중매체에 의해 자살에 긍정적인 태도를 형성한 집단에 있어서는 우울증이 자살위험성에 미치는 영향력이 더욱 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 비록 대중매체의 직접적인 영향력이 나타나지 않는다고 할지라도 대중매체에 의해 자살위험성에 간접적으로 영향을 미칠 수 있기에 자살보도를 함에 있어서 대중매체의 신중한 태도와 중립적인 태도를 요구한다.
