The purpose of this study is to understinad Wonhyo's Vinaya Thought and discuss the meaning of the spirits and practical penance of Mahayana bodhisattva precepts in today's moral education.Wonhyo's Vinaya Thought differed from the preexisting precepts in that it paid attention to the operation of mind and spirit in practice. Hinayana precepts were characterized by objective norms regulating concrete behaviors. However, Wonhyo's bodhisattva precepts underlined the motives and spirits that made precepts possible rather than various discriminations themselves in ascetic exercises and they were the autonomous norms based on the mind of behaviors. While demonstrating the meaning and importance of bodhisattva precepts in 『bodhisattva-śila Bonjibeom Interpretations』, he divided them concretely into three main elements regarding bodhisattva-śila Jibeom such as gravity of the offense, shallowness and depth of degree and ultimate point. Besides, by highlighting that humans should absolutely follow the purification of mind to behave correctly, he explained the entity of weak mind in detail and revealed realistic and practical consciousness of precepts. Furthermore, Wonhyo underlined in 『Inspiring Yourself to Practice』 that the early inspired should consider the precepts as important and continue to keep the will and attitude of thoroughly putting them into practice.In this way, Wonhyo's Vinaya Thought had moral meaning. First, Wonhyo's Vinaya Thought emphasized the spirit, but at the same time it was characterized by its practical trait. Second, in it, there were active moral spirits that benefited others by transcending the action of benefiting oneself. Third, it contained harmonious spirits of Wonyunghoetong (Harmony).Furthermore, the moral meaning of Wonhyo's Vinaya Thought provided us with moral educational implications in today's education as below. First, it regarded the cultivation of nature of Buddha as important as a goal for moral education. Second, Wonhyo emphasized Bodhisattva precepts as the content of moral education. Third, Wonhyo put emphasis on inspiration and action of precepts as ways of moral education.

본 연구의 목적은 원효의 계율 사상을 이해하고 그가 특히 주목했던 대승보살계의 정신과 실천적 계행이 오늘날 우리의 도덕 교육에 시사하는 의의에 대하여 논의하는 것이다.원효의 계율 사상은 실천에 있어서 마음의 작용과 정신을 중시한다는 점이 기존의 계율관과 구분된다. 소승의 계율은 구체적 행위를 규제하는 타율적 규범의 성격이 강했다. 이에 비해 원효의 보살계는 계상 자체 보다는 계를 성립하게 한 동기와 정신을 중시하고 행위자의 마음을 기준으로 삼는 자율적인 규범이었다고 볼 수 있다. 그는『보살계본지범요기』에서 보살계의 의의와 중요성을 밝히면서 보살계 지범에 관한 주요 사항을 죄의 경중, 정도의 얕고 깊음, 궁극적 요점 등의 세 부분으로 나누어 구체적으로 제시하고 있다. 또한 인간이 올바른 행동을 하기 위해서는 반드시 마음의 정화(淨化)가 따라야 함을 강조하면서 악한 마음의 실체에 대해서도 상세히 설명하고 현실적이고 실천적인 계율 인식을 드러냈다. 아울러 원효는『발심수행장』에서도 초발심자들에게 계율을 중시하고 철저히 실천하려는 의지와 태도를 지닐 것을 강조하고 있다. 이러한 원효 계율 사상은 윤리적 의미를 지닌다. 첫째, 원효의 계율 사상은 정신을 강조하면서도 동시에 실천적 성격을 띤다. 둘째, 원효의 계율 사상에는 자리를 초월하여 이타를 추구하는 적극적인 윤리 정신이 드러나 있다. 셋째, 원효의 계율 사상에는 원융회통의 조화 정신이 내재되어 있다. 아울러 이와 같은 원효 계율 사상이 지니는 이와 같은 윤리적 의미가 오늘날 우리의 교육 현장에서 지니는 도덕 교육적 함의는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 도덕 교육의 목표로서 불성의 함양을 중시한다. 둘째, 도덕 교육의 내용으로서 보살계를 강조한다. 셋째, 도덕 교육의 방법으로서 발심과 계행을 중시한다. 원효를 비롯한 불교적 관점에서는 깨달음을 향한 수행의 과정에서 마음의 의미에 주목하고 있다.
