This study aims to examine the essay instruction in 'Ethics and Thought', which is the selected subject of the revised ethics education program. According to the revised ethics education program, it is highly recommended that the schools use the discussion and essay instruction method in the class in order to improve the students’ ability to make ethical judgment and select values.The essay instruction in the 'Ethics and Thought' is a highly effective subject course that promotes the unique function of essay which is a high level of thinking ability. However, the ethics teachers should not emphasize the functional aspect of essay only, but should never forget to teach the essay with the warm-hearted emotion, care and human-like taste.This study, first of all, examined what relationship exists between the ethics and thought subject and essay and then analyzed the contents of the 'Ethics and Thought' textbooks. In the essay instruction of 'Ethics and Thought', rather than the theoretical instruction methods, the study suggested the methods actually tested by the researchers in the class such as ‘writing from the problem awareness of my own life’, ‘the essay instruction through the descriptive evaluation, ‘the discussion and essay instruction through the community of inquiry,’ and ‘essay instruction through the newspaper diary’.

이 연구에서는 도덕과 개정 교육과정 선태과목인 『윤리와 사상』에서의 논술 지도법을 살펴보는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 도덕과 개정 교육과정에 따르면 학생들의 자율적인 도덕적 판단력 및 가치 선택 능력을 신장시키기 위하여 토론 및 논술지도 방법 등을 수업에서 사용할 것을 적극 권장하고 있다. 『윤리와 사상』 교과에서의 논술 지도는 고등 사고 능력이라는 논술 고유의 기능을 살리는 데 매우 효과적인 교과이다. 이에 따라 도덕 교사는 논술의 기능적 측면만 강조해서는 안 된다고 따뜻한 감성과 배려, 인간미가 풍기는 논술 지도해야 함을 잊지 말아야 한다.이 연구는 먼저, 도덕․윤리 교과와 논술은 어떤 관계가 있는지 살펴보고, 논술 지도를 위해 『윤리와 사상』 교과의 내용을 분석하였다. 『윤리와 사상』에서의 논술 지도법에서는 원론적인 지도법이 아닌 연구자가 교실 수업에서 직접 수행했던, ‘나의 문제의식에서 출발하는 글쓰기’, ‘서술형 평가를 통한 논술 지도’, ‘탐구공동체를 통한 토론과 논술 지도’, ‘신문일기를 통한 논술 지도’를 제시하였다.
