This paper examines the outcomes of the 18th General Election of 2008. Especially this study explores the socioeconomic characteristics and political experiences of the candidates elected to office. By utilizing the aggregate data. this study finds that candidates' socioeconomic characteristics such as income, age and gender, as well as party affiliations and incumbency, play a critical role in wining the election. We also find that holding or having held responsible positions in the local government is one of valuable personal assets that make for success. These findings tell us a good deal of information about the distribution of important social characteristics in the Korean National Assembly. This has normative implication in the sense that legislatures are symbols of representative government. For a legislature to fulfill this function, it should reflect the political preferences of the constituents and be a 'microsom' of society to some extent.

이 글의 목적은 2008년 4월 9일 치러진 제18대 총선에서 어떤 요인들이 후보자 당선에 긍정적 혹은 부정적 영향을 끼쳤는가를 분석하는 것이다. 특히 개인의 자질과 사회경제적 배경에 관한 요인들이 선거결과에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는가를 분석하는 것을 주요 목적으로 하고 있다. 특히 집합자료를 활용함으로써 당선결정에 관한 여러 모델들에 관하여 회귀분석을 시도하여, 지역, 정당, 개인적 배경 등의 요인들이 선거결과에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는가를 분석하고 있다. 연구결과 18대 총선에서는 재산, 연령, 성과 같은 후보자 개인의 사회경제적 특성과 소속정당 및 지방자치단체장과 같은 개인의 정치적 경력이 당선여부에 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 경험적 연구결과는 국회는 대의제 정부의 핵심적 기구이고 따라서 선거구민들의 정치적 선호를 반영해야 한다는 대의민주주의라는 관점에서 규범적 의미도 갖는다. 왜냐하면 당선자들의 사회경제적 배경이 선거구민들의 그것과 유사할 때 대의적 기능을 잘 수행할 수 있다는 주장은 여전히 설득력이 있기 때문이다.
