Reasonable rationality, which is on the basis of contemporary society and Social Studies education, caused the phenomenon that aesthetic dimensions such as particularity, individuality, pregiven subjectivity, and emotion are overlooked or excluded because of its universal and objective nature. Aesthetic rationality, which is the alternative viewpoint for overcoming the limitations of reasonable rationality, is based on Kant? justification of the universality of aesthetic judgment and Arendt? practical reinterpretation. Aesthetic rationality pursues aesthetic purposiveness intending rise to universality based on respect for particularity and also pursues free disinterestedness, and is characterized by respect for pre-linguistic and open unregulatedness. Based on the viewpoint of aesthetic rationality, we can define the aesthetic citizenship in a practical dimension of Social Studies, and it is set in the direction of ideologically pursuing disinterested reflection based on harmony between particularity and universality, aesthetic purposiveness, unregulatedness, etc. Furthermore, in social perception education as a theoretical dimension of Social Studies, the viewpoint of aesthetic rationality demands the dimension of learners?pregiven subjective meaning rather than academic strictness for Social Studies knowledge.

현대 사회와 사회과교육이 기반하고 있는 이성적 합리성은 그 보편주의와 객관주의적 성격으로 인해 특수성과 개별성, 선언어적 주관성, 감성(감정) 등의 미감적 차원이 간과되거나 배제되는 현상을 초래하였다. 이러한 이성적 합리성의 한계를 개선하기 위한 대안적 관점으로서 미감적 합리성은 칸트의 미감적 판단 개념과 아렌트의 실천적 재해석을 기반으로 구성되는 것으로서 미감적 합목적성의 추구, 자유로운 무관심성의 지향, 선언어적·개방적 무규정성의 존중 등을 그 특성으로 한다. 미감적 합리성의 관점을 기반으로 사회과교육에서는 먼저 미감적 시민성을 상정할 수 있는데, 이는 특수와 보편의 조화, 미감적 합목적성, 무규정성 등을 바탕으로 무관심적 반성을 이념적으로 추구하는 방향의 것으로 설정된다. 또한 사회 인식 교육에 있어 미감적 합리성의 관점은 사회과 지식에 대한 학적인 엄격성보다는 학습자의 선소여적이고 주관적인 의미차원을 존중할 것을 요구한다.
