In this study, incomes, expenses, properties and debts of the grandparent-headed households were compared and analyzed with a nuclear household and an extended household. First, grandparent-headed households had very short incomes compared to the nuclear and extended households in the income structure analysis for each household kinds, which include followings except the unearned income: the householder income, the earned income of household, and the net income of household. Second, in the analysis about financial assets and debt structure for each household kinds, the grandparent-headed households possessed very low level of financial assets compared to the nuclear and extended households. Third, looking closely into comparison of the expenditure items, there was more expenditures than other household kinds in the categories of furniture and application, housework service, and especially transportation and communication. And they relatively had small amount of expenditures in categories of education, culture and entertainment.Forth, in the verification of differences for financial stability through the debt redemption rate, a net income statistically showed a significant difference, however, the debt redemption rate was statistically insignificant.

본 연구에서는 조손가계의 경제구조를 핵가계 및 확대가계와의 비교를 위해 소득, 지출, 자산, 부채 등으로 나누어 분석하였다. 분석자료는 통계청의 2004년 가계조사 데이터를 사용하였으며, 가구주와 가구원을 기준으로 가계유형을 구분하여 샘플 수가 적은 조손홀조부가계를 제외한 총 8개의 집단(조손홀조모가계, 조손양부모가계, 핵편부가계, 핵편모가계, 핵양부모가계, 확대편부가계, 확대편모가계, 확대양부모가계)으로 나누어 분석하였다. 주요 분석결과로는 첫째, 가계유형별 소득구조분석에 있어서 조손가계가 핵가계와 확대가계에 비해 적은소득을 가지고 있었으며, 특히 조손홀조모가계의 취약한 소득구조가 눈에 띄었다. 둘째, 가계유형별 금융자산과 부채구조에 대한 비교분석에서는 조손가계가 핵가계와 확대가계에 비해 상당히 낮은수준의 금융자산을 보유하고 있었다. 셋째, 가계유형별 소비지출구조 분석에 있어서는 조손가계가 가구집기사용품이나 가사서비스, 교통통신비목에서는 다른 가계유형보다 많은 지출액을 사용하고 있었고, 교육이나 교양오락비목에서는 상대적으로 적은 지출액을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 순소득과 소득 중 부채상환비중을 통해서 알아본 가계유형별 재정적 안정도 차이검증에서는 가계별 순소득이 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였으며, 특히 조손홀조모가계의 경우 심각한 가계경제구조상의 취약성을 드러내고 있었다.
