What is the Environmental Ceramic Art? This is a compound word composed of Environment and Ceramic art, it has been being supposed to be the ceramic formative arts concerned with spaces and people. Environment is the natural world we live in, considered especially as something affected by human activities, which is composed of in urban and natural environments. In the Urban environment we can find in public spaces and the common unspecified people. Ceramic arts as a visual arts have been being worked with clay from ancient time, An Environmental Ceramic Arts have begun to be called as what we call now after 1970, since
when we began to install structures’inner or outer in the urban areas. Ceramic is a kind of craft including both fine Art and Design. As time goes by the fields of Ceramic has been categorized variously. The researcher of this paper thought that it was necessary to concrete the meaning of the comprehensive Environmental Ceramic arts through systematizing them. In such a view point, I will take a look at Environmental ceramic fields based upon public design’s elements through surveying examples utilized variously in the contemparary urban areas. Furthermore, I’m going to propose a direction of the developing of public ceramic for creating images of urban effectively.

환경도예란 무엇일까? 환경과 도예의 두 단어의 합성어로, 공간과 인간과의 관계를 고려한 도자 조형예술로 여겨져 오고 있다. 환경은 생활하는 주위의 상태를 의미하며, 이는 도시환경과 자연환경으로 이루어져 있고, 도시환경에는 불특정한 사람들이 주체로 그 공간에는 공공성이 존재하고 있다. 도자는 흙을 사용하여 환경 속에서 표현되는 시각예술로서 오랜 과거부터 이루어져왔으며, 1970년대 이후 도시환경 안에서 건축물의 내외 공간에 조형물이 설치되면서 환경도예라는 용어가 사용되기 시작했다. 도자는 순수미술과 디자인을 모두 포함하고 있는 공예이다. 시대가 흐름에 따라서 도자의 범주가 다양하게 분류되었고, 그 중 포괄적인 의미를 담고 있는 환경도예를 체계화하여 그 의미를 구체적으로 해야 할 필요성이 있다고 본 연구자는 생각하였다. 이에 본 연구자는 현대 도시환경 속에서 공공성을 띄고 있는 공공디자인 요소들을 기준으로, 도시공간 속에서 환경도예가 현재 다양하게 활용되고 있는 사례를 통해 그 영역을 구체적으로 살펴보고, 나아가 앞으로 도시이미지를 효과적으로 창출하기 위한 공공도자의 방향을 제시하고자 한다.
