There is few systematic and overall study of Choi Soon-Woo's(1916～1984) academic fruit who made efforts in search of our beauty through life. Also quite few people understand his worth. He came to aim to study Korean art history under the influence of Koh Yoo-Sup, the first aesthetician and art historian in Korea. His approach to Korean beauty is based mainly on strong intuitiveness due to experiential grounds rather than the aspect of pattern history, and there is room for criticism that such approach should be accompanied by logical guaranty.But he must be a pioneer in finding out Korean beauty who enabled our people to feel such beauty easily by looking into the beauty characteristics of Korean fine arts on concrete and historic phenomena with his outlook on Korean art formed through a wonderful sense of beauty and personal experience.This dissertation has examined the major characteristics of Korean beauty seen through his outlook on Korean fine arts, high insight, and judgement who devoted himself to our fine arts, awakening us to Korean art. The major features of Korean beauty he pursued have been examined as well. According to his research, our unique taste is to be seen wherever in the country with our nature and life melt into it.Beauty appearing in works of art has unparalleled “humor”, “implicitness”, “calmness”, “rationalism”, “white”, “a serene tone”, “abstraction”, etc., occupying a place among world art works.A number of his writings and essays are more objective and persuasive than any other literature on his subject and may be a great guide post to the history of Korean art.

본 연구는 한국미의 특징에 대해 알아본 것이다. 한국미에 대한 특질은 야나기 무네요시[柳宗悅]에 의한 견해를 근간으로 하여 그의 제자이면서 우리나라 최초 미학자이자 미술학자인 우현 고유섭 연구에 의한 것이 일반적으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 야나기 무네요시나 고유섭은 한국미의 대표적 특징인 자연미나 곡선미 등이 우리나라 민족의 恨에서 비롯된 것으로 보고 있기 때문에 이와 견해를 달리한 최순우와 비교하여 한국미의 특징을 살펴보는 데 의의를 두었다.한국미의 특징은 여러 가지로 살펴볼 수 있지만, 우리나라의 건축, 공예, 회화 등 전통예술을 중심으로 살펴보면, 익살미, 은근미, 순리미, 담조미, 백색미, 추상미, 곡선미 등으로 나누어 볼 수 있다.세계화 시대에 중요한 일은 국가의 정체성을 부각시키는 일이다. 이런 점에서 한국미의 특징을 올바르게 인식하고 한국미의 정체성을 확립하는 것은 매우 필요하고 가치 있는 일이라 생각한다.
