This study was carried out to determine the effect of dietary crude fucoidans extracted from brown algae and brown seaweed powder supplementation on performance and bacterial count on feed additives of early broiler chicks. A total 180 broiler chicks were assigned to 4 treatments. Each treatment had 15 chicks with 3 replications. The supplementation levels of fucoidan and brown seaweed powder in the experimental diets were 0.5% (fucoidan), 3.0% (brown seaweed). The results obtained summarized as follows: The body weight gain and weight of chicks fed fucoidan (0.5%) was heavy compared with control. Feed efficiency of chicks fed fucoidan (0.5%) slightly improved compare with control. But also not significantly different among treatments. Gizzard weight, length of small intestine and weight of small intestine were not significantly different among treatments. The villi height of chicks fed fucoidan (0.5%) was long compared with control. According to these data, this trial proves the fucoidan could be successfully used as the dietary supplement.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary probiotics BiopowderR (BP) on pig performance, carcass characteristics and ammonia concentration in feces. A feeding trial was conducted with a total of 36 growing pigs of an average 29kg body weight. Each treatment had 4 pigs with 3 replications. Pig during grower (26days) and finisher periods (62days) were fed 0.15 and 0.30% concentrations of BP respectively. Body weight gain slightly increased for pigs fed BP during overall periods compared with control, not significantly different. Especially, in growing periods, the body weight gain of BP treatment increased by 10% compared with control (700g vs 775g), in finishing periods, that of BP 0.3% treatment increased by 10% compared with control (890g vs 980g), not significantly different among treatments. Feed intake slightly increased for pigs fed BP in overall periods. During grower periods, the feed intake of BP 0.3% treatment increased by 11.0% more than control, but also not significantly different among treatments. Feed efficiency was slightly improved for pigs fed BP overall periods when compare to the control, but not significantly different among treatments. In feces, average ammonia concentration (ppm) and bacterial count (log cfu/g) were not affected by BP addition. There was no significantly different in carcass weight, fat thickness and carcass grade. In conclusion, supplemental BP tended to slightly improve the performance of pig and did not influenced the concentration of ammonia in feces and carcass characteristics.

In order to investigate the effects of magnetized water treated with HI-Scalper153R on body performance and ammonia concentration in feces of broiler chicks, a feeding trial was conducted with a total of 180 broiler chicks. Each treatment had 18 chicks with 5 replications. Chicks during experimental periods, broiler chicks were fed magnetized water and subterranean water, respectively. The results obtained summarized as follows: Body weight gain slightly increased for broiler chicks fed magnetized water compared with control. But, there is no significantly (p=0.36) different among treatments. Feed intake significantly (p=0.046) decreased for broiler chicks fed magnetized water compared with control. Feed efficiency was significantly (p=0.020) improved for broiler chicks fed magnetized water of each periods when compare to the control. Especially, in starter periods, the feed efficiency of magnetized water treatment increased by 10% more than control (1.80 vs 1.69). In feces, average ammonia concentration (ppm) significantly (p=0.004) decreased in the magnetized water treatment compare to control. Especially, the magnetized water treatment decreased by 2.2 times compared to the control in ammonia concentration of feces (83 vs 37ppm).

This study was carried out to compare the effect of dietary zinc gluconate, fructooligosaccharide and probiotic on body weight gain, feed intake and feed efficiency of broiler chicks. A feeding trial was conducted with a total of 216 broiler chicks. Each treatment had 18 chicks with 3 replications. The supplementation levels of each treatment in the experimental diets were 0.20% for zinc gluconate, fructooligosaccharide and probiotic, respectively. The body gain of chicks fed feed additives significantly increased (p<.05) compare with that of control. Especially, the treatment with probiotic produced higher body gain than other treatments. Average feed intake of chicks was not significantly different among treatments (p<.05). Feed efficiency of chick fed feed additives significantly (p<.05) improved compare with control and the highest in the probiotic treatment. Therefore, the feed efficiency of chicks fed fructooligosaccharide, zinc gluconate and probiotic treatment were increased by 3.5%, 4.0% and 4.5%, respectively compare to that of the control. In conclusion, dietary feed additives tended to slightly improve the body gain and feed efficiency. Especially the treatment with probiotic produced higher body gain and feed efficiency among other treatments.

Differences in liver microRNA profiling in pigs with low and high feed efficiency

Feed cost is the main factor affecting the economic benefits of pig industry. Improving the feed efficiency (FE) can reduce the feed cost and improve the economic benefits of pig breeding enterprises. Liver is a complex metabolic organ which affects the distribution of nutrients and regulates the efficiency of energy conversion from nutrients to muscle or fat, thereby affecting feed efficiency. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that can regulate feed efficiency through the modulation of gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. In this study, we analyzed miRNA profiling of liver tissues in High-FE and Low-FE pigs for the purpose of identifying key miRNAs related to feed efficiency. A total 212~221 annotated porcine miRNAs and 136~281 novel miRNAs were identified in the pig liver. Among them, 188 annotated miRNAs were co-expressed in High-FE and Low-FE pigs. The 14 miRNAs were significantly differentially expressed (DE) in the livers of high-FE pigs and low-FE pigs, of which 5 were downregulated and 9 were upregulated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis of liver DE miRNAs in high-FE pigs and low-FE pigs indicated that the target genes of DE miRNAs were significantly enriched in insulin signaling pathway, Gonadotropin- releasing hormone signaling pathway, and mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway. To verify the reliability of sequencing results, 5 DE miRNAs were randomly selected for quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The qRT-PCR results of miRNAs were confirmed to be consistent with sequencing data. DE miRNA data indicated that liver-specific miRNAs synergistically acted with mRNAs to improve feed efficiency. The liver miRNAs expression analysis revealed the metabolic pathways by which the liver miRNAs regulate pig feed efficiency.

Identification of candidate proteins regulated by long-term caloric restriction and feed efficiency in longissimus dorsi muscle in Korean native steer

We aimed to investigate candidate proteins related to long-term caloric restriction and feed efficiency in bovine longissimus dorsi muscle (LM). A total of 31 Korean native steers were randomly distributed to ad libitum (n = 16) or caloric restriction group (n = 15) to conduct two feeding trials for 13 mon. In the first trial (10?18 mon of age), steers were fed with 100% ad libitum (NEg = 0.63 Mcal/kg) or caloric restriction (80% of the previous day’s feed intake of ad libitum group). In the second trial (18?23 mon of age), the energy value of 100% ad libitum diet was 1.13 Mcal/kg NEg and those in caloric restriction group diet was 0.72 Mcal/kg NEg. At the endpoint of this experiment, in each group, 6 animals were selected with high (n = 3) or low feed efficiency (n = 3) to collect muscle tissue samples (6 animals/group). From muscle tissues of 23 mo of age, we excavated 9 and 12 differentially expressed (two-fold or more) proteins in a nutritional group and feed efficiency group using two-dimensional electrophoresis, respectively. Of these proteins, heat shock protein beta-6 was up-regulated in both the caloric restriction and the low feed efficiency group. In bovine embryonic fibroblasts, the mRNA expression of heat shock protein beta-6 increased after adipogenic differentiation, however, decreased after myogenic differentiation. Our data provide that heat shock protein beta-6 may be an adipogenic protein involved in the mechanism of caloric restriction and feed efficiency in the LM of the steer.

Holstein, 한우 및 교잡종 거세우의 발육능력과 사료이용성 및 도체특성 비교 연구

Holstein, 한우 및 교잡종(홀스타인♀×한우♂) 거세 송아지 각 8두씩 총 24두(평균 체중, Holstein:196.9kg, 한우:158.8kg, 교잡종:169.6kg)를 대상으로 7개월령부터 24개월령까지 비육시험을 수행한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 품종별 일당증체량은 육성기, 비육전기, 비육후기 및 전 기간에 각각 0.797~1.025, 0.895~1.280, 0.668~0.893 및 0.786~1.061kg으로 Holstein 및 교잡종이 한우보다 각각 35 및 22% 더 증체하였다(P<0.05). 1kg 증체에 소요된 농후사료 및 TDN 량은 한우, 교잡종 및 Holstein 순으로 많았으나 품종 간에 뚜렷한 차이는 없었다. 도체조사 결과, 도체율은 한우, 교잡종 및 Holstein 순으로 높았지만(P<0.05), 거래정육율은 교잡종, Holstein 및 한우 순으로 높았다(P<0.05). 등지방두께는 한우, 교잡종 및 Holstein 순으로 높았고, 육량지수는 한우가 교잡종이나 Holstein 보다 높았지만 통계적인 유의성은 없었다. 근내지방도는 한우, 교잡종 및 Holstein이 각각 4.4, 4.1 및 4.0으로 한우가 교잡종이나 Holstein 보다 높았다. 쇠고기의 물리화학적 특성에서 한우가 전단력이나 보수력 등이 교잡종이나 Holstein 보다 우수하였고, 관능검사 결과 다즙성, 연도 및 향미 등도 다소 우수하였지만 통계적인 유의성은 없었다. 경제성 분석결과 총수입은 한우가 가장 많았지만, 경영비 중 비육밑소의 비용이 높아 소득은 Holstein, 교잡종 및 한우의 순으로 높았다. 이상과 같은 결과들을 종합해 볼 때 Holstein 및 교잡종을 한우와 같이 고급육 프로그램에 의거 장기간 비육 할 때 한우와 비슷한 수준의 고급육을 생산할 수 있으며 소득도 한우에 뒤지지 않을 것으로 판단된다.

This study was conducted to investigate the optimal feeding program for producing the high quality meat on the base of the information deriving from the comparison of the growth performance and carcass characteristics among the breeds; Holstein, Hanwoo and F1(Holstein♀×Hanwoo♂) steers. Twenty four steers on 3 treatment(i. e. eight head/breed) were used for 540 days from seven to 24 months of age.The results obtained are summarized as follows; the ranges of average daily gains were 0.797 to 1.025, 0.895 to 1.280, 0.668 to 0.893 and 0.786 to 1.061kg for the growing, the fattening, the finishing and the entire periods, respectively, indicating that the gains were higher for Holstein(35%) and F1(22%) steers than for Hanwoo steers. Concentrates and TDN intakes per kg gain were numerically higher for Hanwoo steers than F1 or Holstein steers. In carcass characteristics, dressing percent for Hanwoo and F1 steers were higher than that for Holstein steers. Back fat thickness and meat yield index were not significantly different among the breeds. Marbling scores were 4.4, 4.1 and 4.0 for Hanwoo, F1 and Holstein steers, respectively. In physicochemical properties of longissimus dorsi, cooking loss for F1 steers was significantly lower than that for Holstein steers. However, the breeds did not affect shear force, water holding capacity and panel test scores of juiciness, tenderness and flavor. In economic analysis, although the gross receipt were the higher for Hanwoo than the others due to the high purchasing cost of Hanwoo calves, net income was the higher for Holstein and F1 steers than Hanwoo steers.According to the above results, we may concluded that high quality meat by Holstein or F1 steers can be produced if the Hanwoo quality meat production program is applied to Holstein or F1 steers management. Also, the farm net income by Holstein or F1 steers could be as high as that by Hanwoo quality meat production.

농후사료 급여수준 및 방목이 추계분만 한우 암송아지의성장발육 사료이용성 및 번식능력에 미치는 효과

가을철에 태어난 한우 암송아지 36두를 방목전·후의 농후사료 급여수준에 따라 4개 처리(T1: 체중의 0.5%, T2: 체중의 1.0%, T3: 체중의 1.5%, T4 : 체중의 2.0%)를 두어 방목기 195일을 포함한 426일간 사양 시험한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.1) 전기간의 일당증체량은 T4, T3, T2 및 T1이 각각 0.501, 0.450, 0.403 및 0.348kg으로 방목전·후 사사기의 농후사료 급여수준이 증가할수록 높았으며, 방목기의 일당증체량은 방목전 육성기의 농후사료 급여수준이 체중의 1.0%일 때가 가장 높았다. 2) 공시기간 동안 kg 증체에 소요된 TDN량은 8.50∼8.70kg(평균 8.61kg)이었고, T3, T4, T1, 및 T2의 순으로 사료이용성이 높았으며, 방목기간의 kg 증체에 소요된 TDN량은 7.99∼10.96kg(평균 9.22kg)으로 방목전의 농후사료 급여수준이 증가할수록 높았다. 그리고 전기간동안 농후사료에 대한 조사료 비율은 49.6∼68.2%(평균 58.5%)이었다. 3) 체중 225kg에 도달되는 시기는 14.1∼16.1개월령(평균 15.1개월령), 그리고 체중 250kg에 도달되는 시기는 16.4∼19.0개월령(평균 17.6개월령)으로 사사기의 배합사료 급여수준이 체중 대비 0.5% 증가함에 따라 초임시기가 약 0.9개월씩 단축되었다. 첫 종부는 평균 19.5개월령, 272.2kg에 실시되었고 임신율은 52.8%였지만, 사사기 농후사료 급여수준이 1.5% 이상일 때는 임신율이 66.6%로 증가하였다. 이상과 같은 결과들을 종합해 볼 때 가을에 태어난 한우 암송아지를 축사에서 볏짚 위주로 사육할 때의 농후사료 급여수준은 체중의 1.8% 그리고 개량초지에서 방목사육 할 때에는 체중의 1.5%가 적정수준인 것으로 판단된다.

Present study was conducted to investigate the effect of the level of concentrates and pasture grazing in 36 autumn born Hanwoo heifers(initial body weight, 119.7 25.6kg) for 426d including 195d for a pasture stage. The animals were fed commercial concentrates at a rate of 0.5%(T1), 1.0%(T2), 1.5%(T3) and 2.0%(T4) of body weight, respectively, for pre- and post-pasture.1. Mean daily gains by treatments were 0.348, 0.403, 0.450 and 0.501kg for T1, T2, T3 and T4, respectively, indicating that increases in concentrates intake was associated with the daily gain of grazing Hanwoo heifers. However, the mean daily gain was the highest for T2 during the pasture stage.2. TDN intakes per 1kg gain were, on average, 8.61kg for the entire experimental period and 9.22kg for the pasture stage, respectively. In addition, the rate of roughage to concentrate during the entire experimental period was 49.6 to 68.2%(mean 58.5%). 3. Age reached 225 and 250kg of body weight was, on an average, 15.1mo. and 17.6mo., respectively, indicating that increasing the level of concentrates feeding(by 0.5% of body weight) reduced the first pregnancy by 0.9 mo. Ages and body weight for first service were 19.5mo. and 272.2 kg, respectively. Mean pregnant rate of total heads was approximately 52.8%, but appeared to 66.6% for T3 and T4. Therefore, it may be concluded that the optimum level of concentrates for autumn born Hanwoo heifers is 1.8% of body weight for indoor feeding on rice straw-based diet and 1.5% of body weight for a pasture stage, respectively.

Holstein 거세송아지 24두를 대상으로 육성 및 비육전기의 조사료 급여형태에 따라 3개 처리(T1: 농후사료+볏짚, T2: 농후사료+목건초, T3: 맥주박 TMR)를 두어 6개월령부터 23개월령까지 18개월간 사양시험 후 도체조사를 실시한 결과, 처리별 출하체중 및 일당증체량은 각각 751~802 kg(평균 782.3 kg) 및 1.064~1.159 kg(평균 1.122 kg)으로 모두 T2 > T3 > T1 순으로 높았고, T2의 일당증체량이 T1에 비해 8.9%가 개선되었다. 도체율, 등지방두께 및 등심단면적은 각각 60.6~60.9 %, 6.50~7.13mm 및 82.9~84.1cm2 이었고, 근내지방도 및 육색은 각각 3.1~3.3 및 4.0~4.1 이었으며, 쇠고기의 전단력 및 보수력은 각각 4.6~4.7 및 50.7~50.9로 이들 모두는 처리간에 유의차는 없었으나, 소득은 두당 882.8~991.7천원으로 T2 및 T3가 T1 보다 12~7% 더 높았다.이상과 같은 결과들을 종합해 볼 때 Holstein 거세우를 23개월령까지 비육할 경우, 근내지방도가 높은 쇠고기 생산이 가능하며, 육성 및 비육전기에 목건초나 맥주박위주의 TMR을 급여하면 볏짚보다 출하체중을 높여 소득을 향상시킬 것으로 판단된다.

Twenty four Holstein steers fed commercial concentrates with rice straw(T1), mixed grass hay(T2), or wet brewer’s grains based TMR ad libitum(T3) were used to investigate the effects of roughage feeding type during the growing and early-fattening periods on growth performance, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics. Growth performance and feed efficiency were investigated during the feeding trial conducted from 6 to 23 mo of age, and carcass characteristics were investigated after slaughter. Body weight at slaughter and daily gains were 751 to 802 kg(mean 782 kg) and 1.064 to 1.159 kg/d(mean 1.122 kg/d), respectively, showing that those for T2 were highest followed by T3. Compared with T1, the daily gain for T2 was improved by 8.9%. The TDN intakes per kg gain were 6.87, 7.17 and 7.15 kg for T1, T3 and T2, respectively, indicating that feed efficiency for T2 was improved(approx. 5%) compared with T1. The feeding treatments did not change dressing percentage(mean 60.8%), back fat thickness(6.68 mm) and rib-eye area(84.0cm2). Neither meat quality characteristics nor physicochemical properties were significantly different among the treatments. However, economic analysis accounting for 882.8, 991.7 and 943.8 thousand won per head for T1, T2 and T3, respectively, indicated that T2 and T3 increased(7~12%) total net income compared with T1. Therefore, it may be concluded that high quality meat of Holstein steers can be produced if they are fattened until 23 mo of age and that feeding mixed grass hay as roughage or TMR containing mainly wet brewer's grains during the growing and early-fattening periods can improve growth performance compared with feeding rice straw.

홀스타인 거세우에 대한 육성기 농후사료 급여형태 및 출하월령이 성장발육, 사료이용성 및 도체특성에 미치는 효과

Holstein 거세우 48두를 대상으로 육성기 농후사료 급여수준 및 출하월령에 따른 산육능력 및 도체특성 구명을 위해 6개 처리(T1 : 자유채식 19개월령 출하, T2 : 제한급여 19개월령 출하, T3 : 자유채식 22개월령 출하, T4 : 제한급여 22개월령 출하, T5 : 자유채식 25개월령 출하, T6 : 제한급여 25개월령 출하)를 두어 4개월령부터 25개월령까지 사양시험 후 도체조사를 실시한 결과, 육성기 농후사료 자유채식 및 제한급여에 따른 출하월령별 체중 및 전기간의 일당증체량은 19, 22 및 25개월령에 각각 657.7~731.3kg과 1.090~1.245kg, 749.0~776.5kg과 1.079~1.130kg, 그리고 772.4~811.9kg과 0.975~1.030kg으로, 출하체중은 자유채식보다 제한급여가 그리고 출하월령이 높을수록 높았고, 일당증체량도 자유채식보다 제한급여가 그리고 출하월령이 낮을수록 높았으며, 제한급여가 자유채식보다 약 8.3% 증가하였고 출하월령이 경과됨에 따라 월평균 2.0%씩 감소하였다. 1kg 증체에 소요된 TDN은 평균 6.765kg 이었고, 제한급여가 자유채식보다 8.4% 적게 소요되었고, 출하시기가 1개월 늦어짐에 따라 소요량이 약 4%가 증가되었다. 도체조사 결과, 등지방두께 및 등심단면적은 4.6~8.5mm(평균 6.7mm) 및 73.8~81.8cm2(평균 77.1cm2)로 자유채식보다 제한급여가 그리고 출하시기가 늦어질수록 두껍거나 넓어졌고, 근내지방도는 1.17~3.67(평균 2.46)로 자유채식보다 제한급여가 그리고 출하시기가 늦어질수록 높았다. 경제성 분석결과 총 소득은 537.2~1,071.8천원/두으로 자유채식보다 제한급여가 그리고 출하월령이 늦어질수록 높았지만, 월평균 소득은 26.4~52.9천원/두으로 T4>T6>T2의 순으로 높았다. 이상과 같은 결과들을 종합해 볼 때, Holstein 거세우 비육시 조사료원이 볏짚일 경우, 육성기에는 농후사료를 체중의 1.9% 수준으로 그리고 비육기에는 자유채식의 형태로 하되, 22~25개월령 사이에 출하하는 것이 바람직 할 것으로 판단된다.

The objectives of this work was to investigate the effects of feeding type of concentrates during growing period and slaughter age on growth performance, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics in growing-fattening Holstein steers. Treatments were two concentrates feeding types(ad libitum or restricted 1.9% of BW) and three slaughter ages(at 19, 22 or 25 mo). Body weight at slaughter was numerically higher(approx. 8.3%) for the restricted than the ad libitum feeding groups. TDN intake rate was higher(8.4%) for the restricted than the ad libitum feeding groups. One mo slaughter delay increased TDN intake by 4%. Despite the lack of significances, higher back fat thickness and rib-eye area appeared in the restricted feeding or the late slaughter groups compared with the ad libitum feeding or the early slaughter groups. Marbling score(mean 2.46) numerically increased when the steers were restrictively fed concentrates compared with the ad libitum feeding groups. In addition, significant increases in the marbling score were associated with the slaughter age delay. In economic analysis, increases in total income were associated with the restricted feeding and the slaughter age delay. Whereas the highest monthly income appeared in the restricted feeding-and-slaughter at 22 mo group.In conclusion, the optimal feeding system may be 1) the restricted concentrates feeding(1.9% of BW) during growing period and 2) the late slaughter age(22~25 mo of age) in growing-fattening Holstein steers fed rice straw.

한우 송아지 이유시기가 증체, 사료섭취량, 질병발생 및어미소의 번식효율에 미치는 영향

본 연구는 한우 송아지의 이유시기별 발육, 사료섭취량, 질병발생 및 어미소의 번식효율에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 수행되었다. 시험축은 축산연구소에서 자체 생산된 한우 송아지 60두를 공시하여 이유시기별로 조기이유(EW, 생후 3개월령)와 관행이유(NW, 생후 4개월령)에 각각 29 및 31두씩 배치하여 두 개의 시험구를 두었다. 송아지의 포유기 및 이유후 체중과 일당증체량은 이유시기에 따른 차이는 없었다(p>0.05). 또한 인공유, 목건초, 건물, 조단백질 및 TDN 섭취량도 이유시기에 의한 영향은 없었다(p>0.05). 어미소의 분만간격은 관행이유 시험구에 비해 조기이유 시험구에서 23일 정도 단축되는 경향을 보였다(p>0.05). 한편 이유시기에 따른 발생 질병의 종류와 발병율은 시험구간 차이가 없는 것으로 조사되었다. 따라서 이유시기 단축이 한우 송아지의 성장, 사료섭취량 및 질병 발생에 미치는 부의 영향은 없었을 뿐만 아니라 어미소의 분만간격을 단축시키는데 효과가 있는 것으로 사료된다.

This study was conducted to investigate effects of weaning age on growth perforance, feed intake, disease occurrence and maternal reproductive efficiency in Hanwoo. Sixty experimental calves were allocated into two groups, early weaned (n=29, calf age 90 d, EW) and normally weaned (n=31, calf age 120 d, NW). Body weights and average daily gains during nursing and post-weaning periods were similar between two groups (p>0.05). Weaning age had no effect on calf starter, grass hay, dry matter, crude protein and TDN intakes of calves (p>0.05). Maternal calving interval in EW was shortened by 23 days compared to NW (p>0.05). Any difference in occurrence of disease was not observed between groups. Present results indicate that early weaning age has no negative effects on growth performance, feed intake or on disease occurrence in Hanwoo calves. And it has positive influence on maternal calving interval.
