Since recently only an auto-correlated superposition coding (SC) scheme for non-orthogonal multiple access(NOMA) has been investigated, this paper proposes a cross-correlated SC scheme for NOMA. First, we derive the closed-form expression of the sum rate of the proposed cross-correlated SC scheme. Then, numerical analyses demonstrate that the sum rate of the proposed cross-correlated SC scheme is larger than that of the conventional auto-correlated SC scheme. We also show that for the stronger channel gain user, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of the proposed cross-correlated SC scheme is about 15, compared with the conventional auto-correlated SC scheme. As a result, the proposed cross-correlated SC scheme could be a promising technology for 6G ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC).

In binary-modulation non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), there has been rare researches for the 1+1 capacity region to be achieved; how much total power is required and what power allocation is assigned for this total power. In this paper, the average total transmitted power to achieve 1+1 capacity region of binary pulse amplitude modulation (2PAM) NOMA is investigated, with a tolerable loss. Then, based on the sufficient average total transmitted power, we calculate the power allocation coefficient to achieve 1+1 capacity region. Furthermore, it is shown by numerical results that with the tolerable loss less than 0.008, near 1+1 capacity region is achieved. We also calculate numerically the power allocation coefficient for both users to achieve near 1+1 capacity region. As a result, for 2PAM NOMA to operate near 1+1 capacity region, proper total power with appropriate power allocation could be calculated in design of NOMA systems.

In non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), the degraded performance of the weaker channel gain user is a problem. In this paper, we propose the asymmetric binary pulse amplitude modulation (2PAM), to improve the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the weaker channel user in NOMA with the tolerable BER loss of the stronger channel user. First, we design the asymmetric 2PAM, calculate the total allocated power, and derive the closed-form expression for the BER of the proposed scheme. Then it is shown that the BER of the weaker channel user improves, with the small BER loss of the stronger channel user. The superiority of the proposed scheme is also validated by demonstating that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of the weaker channel user is about 10 dB, with the SNR loss of 3 dB of the stronger channel user. In result, the asymmetric 2PAM could be considered in NOMA of 5G systems. As a direction of the future research, it would be meaningful to analyze the achievable data rate for the propsed scheme.

In the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks, the mobile services require 100 times faster connections. One of the promising 5G technologies is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). In NOMA, the users share the channel resources, so that the more users can be served simultaneously. There are several advantages offered by NOMA, such as higher spectrum efficiency and low transmission latency, compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA), which is usually used in the fourth generation (4G) mobile networks, for example, long term evolution (LTE). In this paper, we compare the receivers for NOMA. The standard NOMA receiver, the non-SIC NOMA receiver, and the symmetric superposition coding (SC) NOMA receiver are compared. Specifically, it is shown that the performance of the standard receiver is the best, whereas the performances of the non-SIC receiver and symmetric SC receiver are dependent on the power allocation.

In this study, we design a superposition polar code that can achieve the capacity region of binary-input less-noisy broadcast channels asymptotically. Simulation results show that a better rate region is achievable by superposition polar coding than by time sharing between two point-to-point channel polar codes.

Recently, a lossless non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) implementation without successive interference cancellation (SIC) has been proposed in the literature of NOMA. This lossless non-SIC NOMA was achieved via correlated superposition coding (CSC), in contrast to conventional independent superposition coding (ISC). However, only the achievable data rates for CSC NOMA were investigated. Thus, this paper proposes a practical CSC NOMA scheme under Rayleigh fading channel environments. First, we design the practical CSC NOMA scheme, namely quadrature correlated superposition modulation (CSM) NOMA, without channel coding, i.e., uncoded systems. In addition, we calculate the symbol error rates (SERs) for this quadrature CSM NOMA scheme. Then, simulations demonstrate that for the weak channel gain’s user, the SER performance of the proposed quadrature CSM NOMA is shown to be improved greatly, compared to that of the conventional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) NOMA, whereas for the strong channel gain’s user, the SER performance of the proposed quadrature CSM NOMA degrades a little, compared to that of the conventional QAM NOMA. As a result, the proposed quadrature CSM NOMA scheme could be considered as a practical NOMA scheme for CSC NOMA schemes toward the fifth-generation (5G) and next generation communications.

The fifth generation (5G) mobile communication has been more commercialized worldwide. One of the promising 5G technologies is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We present the achievable sum rate of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with correlated superposition coding (SC). Then this paper investigates the impacts of correlation on the achievable sum rate of correlated SC NOMA. It is shown that the achievable sum rate of correlated SC NOMA is greater than that of standard independent SC NOMA, for the most of the values of the power allocation factor over the meaningful range of the user fairness. In result, correlated SC could be a promising scheme for NOMA.

Recently, a lossless non-successive interference cancellation (SIC) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) implementation has been proposed. Such lossless NOMA without SIC is achieved via correlated superposition coding (SC), in comparison with conventional independent SC. However, only high-correlated SC was investigated in the lossless non-SIC NOMA implementation. Thus, this paper investigates lowcorrelated SC, especially a lossless interval, owing to low-correlation between signals. First, for the low-correlated SC scheme, we derive the closed-form expressions for the two roots with which the lossless interval is defined. Then, simulations demonstrate that the lossless interval of low-correlated SC NOMA is enlarged, with a degraded middle interval, compared to that of high-correlated SC NOMA. Moreover, we also show that such tendency becomes stronger as the value of the correlation coefficient varies. As a result, the proposed low-correlated SC scheme could be considered as a promising correlated SC scheme, with the enlarged lossless interval in NOMA toward the future sixth-generation (6G) ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC).

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has gained the significant attention in the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication, which enables the advanced smart convergence of the artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), and many of the state-of-the-art technologies. Recently, correlated superposition coding (SC) has been proposed in NOMA, to achieve the near-perfect successive interference cancellation (SIC) bit-error rate (BER) performance for the stronger channel users, and to mitigate the severe BER performance degradation for the weaker channel users. In the correlated SC NOMA scheme, the stronger channel user BER performance is even better than the perfect SIC BER performance, for some range of the power allocation factor. However, such excessively good BER performance is not good for the user-fairness, i.e., the more power to the weaker channel user and the less power to the stronger channel user, because the excessively good BER performance of the stronger channel user results in the worse BER performance of the weaker channel user. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the power splitting to establish the user-fairness between both users. First, we derive a closed-form expression for the power splitting factor. Then it is shown that in terms of BER performance, the user-fairness is established between the two users. In result, the power splitting scheme could be considered in correlated SC NOMA for the user-fairness.

Recently, to improve the performance of the strongest channel gain user in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with a non-uniform source and symmetric superposition coding (SSC), a novel bit-to-symbol (BTS) mapping have been proposed. However, only the performance of the user with the stronger channel gain was analyzed. Thus, we compare the bit-error rate (BER) of the new BTS scheme with that of uniform sources, especially for the user with weakest channel gain. First, we show that the performance of the novel BTS scheme for the user with weakest channel gain also improves, compared to that of the uniform sources. Furthermore, the signal-to-noise (SNR) gain of the new BTS scheme over the uniform sources is calculated. As a consequence, the novel BTS scheme would improve the performance of the user with weakest channel gain as well as that with the stronger channel gain for SSC NOMA with a non-uniform source.

In this paper, to improve further the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the stronger channel user in non-uniform source non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with symmetric superposition coding (SSC), we propose a smart bit-to-symbol (BTS) mapping of SSC. First, the analytical expression for the total allocated power of the proposed BTS mapping scheme is derived, and then we show that the BER of the proposed BTS mapping scheme improves further, compared to that of the existing BTS mapping scheme. Moreover, based on the simulations, the signal-to-noise (SNR) gain of the proposed BTS mapping scheme over the existing BTS mapping scheme is calculated. In result, the proposed BTS mapping could be a candidate scheme for non-uniform source SSC NOMA with the SNR gain.

Lempel-Ziv coding is one of the most famous source coding schemes. The output of this source coding is usually a non-uniform code, which requires additional source coding, such as arithmetic coding, to reduce a redundancy. However, this additional source code increases complexity and decoding latency. Thus, this paper proposes the optimal maximum a-posteriori (MAP) receiver for non-uniform source non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with symmetric superposition coding (SSC). First, we derive an analytical expression of the bit-error rate (BER) for non-uniform source NOMA with SSC. Then, Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the BER of the optimal MAP receiver for the non-uniform source improves slightly, compared to that of the conventional receiver for the uniform source. Moreover, we also show that the BER of an approximate analytical expression is in a good agreement with the BER of Monte Carlo simulation. As a result, the proposed optimal MAP receiver for non-uniform source could be a promising scheme for NOMA with SSC, to reduce complexity and decoding latency due to additional source coding.

In the Internet of Thing (IoT) framework, massive machine-type communications (MMTC) have required large spectral efficiency. For this, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has emerged as an efficient solution. Recently, a non-successive interference cancellation (SIC) NOMA scheme has been implemented without loss. This lossless NOMA without SIC is achieved via correlated superposition coding (SC), in contrast to conventional independent SC. However, conventional minimum high-correlated SC for only 2-user NOMA schemes was investigated in the lossless 2-user non-SIC NOMA implementation. Thus, this paper investigates a 3-user low-correlated SC scheme, especially for an inflated achievable sum rate, with a design of 3-user low-correlated SC. First, we design the 3-user low-correlated SC scheme by taking the minimum sum rate between 3–user SIC NOMA and 3-user non-SIC NOMA, both with correlated SC. Then, simulations demonstrate that the low correlation in the direction of the first user’s power allocation inflates the sum rate in the same direction, compared to that of conventional minimum high-correlated SC NOMA, and such inflation due to low correlation is also observed similarly, in the direction of the second user’s power allocation. Moreover, we also show that the two low correlations of the first and second users inflates doubly in the both directions of the first and second users’ power allocations. As a result, the proposed 3-user low-correlated SC could be considered as a promising scheme, with the inflated sum rate in the future fifth-generation (5G) NOMA networks.

As a new paradigm in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), correlated superposition coding (CSC) has gained an attention in the literature of NOMA, in contrast to standard independent superposition coding (ISC). In the conventional 3-user CSC scheme, it has been reported that the average allocated power can be reduced, owing to an introduced correlation between transmitted signals. Thus, this paper proposes a 3-user cross CSC scheme with purely-imaginary correlation coefficients. First, we derive the achievable data rates of the proposed 3-user cross CSC scheme, for each of the three users. Then, simulations demonstrate that for the proposed 3-user cross CSC scheme, the achievable data rates of the first and second users increase greatly and slightly, respectively, whereas the achievable data rate of the third user decreases little, compared to those of the conventional 3-user CSC scheme. In addition, we also show that the sum rate of the three users of the proposed 3-user cross CSC scheme is much larger than that of the three users of the conventional 3-user CSC scheme. As a result, the proposed 3-user cross CSC scheme could be a solution to the problem of the reduction of the average allocated total power in the conventional 3-user CSC scheme toward the fifth-generation (5G) NOMA mobile networks.

In the Internet-of-Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), complete implementations are dependent largely on the speed of the fifth generation (5G) networks. However, successive interference cancellation (SIC) in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) of the 5G mobile networks can be still decoding latency and receiver complexity in the conventional SIC NOMA scheme. Thus, in order to reduce latency and complexity of inherent SIC in conventional SIC NOMA schemes, we propose a rate-lossless non-SIC NOMA scheme. First, we derive the closed-form expression for the achievable data rate of the asymmetric 2PAM non-SIC NOMA, i.e., without SIC. Second, the exact achievable power allocation interval of this rate-lossless non-SIC NOMA scheme is also derived. Then it is shown that over the derived achievable power allocation interval of user-fairness, rate-lossless non-SIC NOMA can be implemented. As a result, the asymmetric 2PAM could be a promising modulation scheme for rate-lossless non-SIC NOMA of 5G networks, under user-fairness.

As the number of mobile devices has been increasing tremendously, system capacity should be enlarged in future next generation communication, such as the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) mobile networks. For such future networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been considered as promising multiple access technology. In this paper, to reduce both latency and complexity in existing NOMA, we propose non-successive interference cancellation (SIC) NOMA with asymmetric binary pulse amplitude modulation (2PAM), nearly without bit-error rate (BER) loss. First, we derive the closed form of BER expressions for non-SIC NOMA with asymmetric 2PAM, especially under Rayleigh fading channels. Then, it is shown that the BER performance of the stronger channel user who is supposed to perform SIC in conventional NOMA can be nearly achieved by the proposed non-SIC NOMA with asymmetric 2PAM, especially without SIC. Furthermore, we also show that the BER performance of the weaker channel user in conventional NOMA can be more closely achieved by the proposed non-SIC NOMA with asymmetric 2PAM. These BERs are shown to be achieved over the part of the power allocation range, which is consistent with the NOMA principle of user fairness. As a result, the non-SIC NOMA scheme with asymmetric 2PAM could be considered as a promising NOMA scheme toward next generation communication.

As the number of connected smart devices and applications increases explosively, the existing orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques have become insufficient to accommodate mobile traffic, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT). Fortunately, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks has been regarded as a promising solution, owing to increased spectral efficiency and massive connectivity. In this paper, we investigate the achievable data rate for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with negatively-correlated information sources (CIS). For this, based on the linear transformation of independent random variables (RV), we derive the closed-form expressions for the achievable data rates of NOMA with negatively-CIS. Then it is shown that the achievable data rate of the negatively-CIS NOMA increases for the stronger channel user, whereas the achievable data rate of the negatively-CIS NOMA decreases for the weaker channel user, compared to that of the positively-CIS NOMA for the stronger or weaker channel users, respectively. We also show that the sum rate of the negatively-CIS NOMA is larger than that of the positively-CIS NOMA. As a result, the negatively-CIS could be more efficient than the positively-CIS, when we transmit CIS over 5G NOMA networks.

While the fifth generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) mobile communication networks are being rolled over the globe, several world-wide companies have already started to prepare the sixth generation (6G). Such 6G mobile networks targets ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). In this paper, we challenge to reduce the inherent latency of existing non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in 5G networks of massive connectivity. First, we propose the novel unipodal binary pulse amplitude modulation (2PAM) NOMA, especially without SIC, which greatly reduce the latency in existing NOMA. Then, the achievable data rates for the unipodal 2PAM NOMA are derived. It is shown that for unequal gain channels, the sum rate of the unipodal 2PAM NOMA is comparable to that of the standard 2PAM NOMA, whereas for equal gain channels, the sum rate of the unipodal 2PAM NOMA is superior to that of the standard 2PAM NOMA. In result, the unipodal 2PAM could be a promising modulation scheme for NOMA systems toward 6G.

In this paper, the authors propose the pseudo complex correlation coefficient (PCCC) of the two complex random variables (RV), because the four real correlation coefficients (RCC) of the corresponding four real RVs cannot be obtained only from the complex correlation coefficient (CCC) of given two complex RV. Such observation is motivated by the general statement; “The complex jointly-Gaussian random M-vector cannot be completely described by the complex covariance matrix, even though the real Gaussian random 2M-vector can be completely descried by the real covariance matrix. Therefore, in order to describe completely the complex jointly-Gaussian random M-vector, we need an additional matrix, namely the complex pseudo-covariance matrix, along with the complex covariance matrix.” Then, we apply PCCC to correlated information sources (CIS) for non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in 5G system, and investigate impact of the proposed PCCC on the achievable data rate of the stronger channel user in the conventional successive interference cancellation (SIC) NOMA with CIS. It is shown that for the given same CCC, the achievable data rates with the different PCCC are different, because the corresponding RCC are different. We also show that as the absolute value of the same CCC increases, the impact of the different PCCC becomes more significant.
